Vodafone Mobile data charging a lot.. Any suggestion?

Hi,

Just today (Saturday) in the morning I was on my bed sleeping and was not fully awake I got a message in my mobile asking for Google Auto Backup and as I was not fully awake so I think I press Yes on that. Later I got a message from Vodafone saying that I have used almost 2GB extra data and now I have to pay $134 extra for it. Actually what happen is when I click YES on Auto backup it uploads all my pics on the mobile to Google when my data is ON. As I am in $50 plan and I have 2GB of data included on it which is more than enough for me. As it has been done unknowingly and I don't need those backup as well so it's worthless to pay $134. Later I call Vodafone and asked them to give me some discount on it, they told me that I need to add 30$ data plan (3GB of data) which is 12 month contract and they can give me $60 discount on the amount that I need to pay. As 1Gb data is more than enough for me so I think that it's useless for me to get 3GB and pay $30 extra every month. And if I pay $30 extra every month then in 12 month I will spend $240 extra which is useless for me when I don't use Internet data that much.

This is all done without my knowledge as you guys may understand that when you are not fully awake you can hardly see the thing what you did.

Did anyone got similar kind of thing and did anyone get through it? How?

Suggestion Please. Thanks in advance.

I was half a asleep and shot a guy. The court accepted this argument, I now just make sure I am fully awake before I do anything. Thank goodness it is an acceptable excuse.

    Is this thread serious?

Op this is your fault. Your phone settings and how sleepy you were had nothing to do with Vodafone.

That is quite cheap for 2GB of data. I went over 400mb on Liveconnected and got charged $350. This is after they took my service offline after a system billing error for 5 days with no reason or explanation, then reactivated my service after 10+ emails to CS. They then neglect to notify me they deactivated the over-cap data limit, and along with a faulty usage meter led to the over-usage.

Suffice to say I'm now on telechoice and awaiting TIO input

Yeah that's illegal. TIO is the way to go!

You joined OzBargain today to try and weasel out of something that was totally your fault??? Pay the money and move on - and hopefully be more awake the next time you do stuff.

Pay the charge, you are liable for your own actions.

Settings, wireless and network > data usage. Touch the three dot menu. Uncheck auto-sync data. You could also go to accounts, select your main account, then un-tag by group [app data, browser, calendar …] for high data fields such as photos or ones you wish to maintain an illusion of privacy for until the next update…

Other than that, I'm in full agreement with the group. If you're like me, and 1 Gb is enough and this amount of money is a worry, why isn't your data on mobile off until you need it, and the phone sitting on Wifi? [assuming you have land-link]

  • Suck it up, pay, learn your lesson. Most phones should have a setting which allows you to set a limit where data cuts out and you will receive warnings when it approaches this limit, if you have that, use it and you will never have to worry

  • I have a similar problem with Vodafone when I was overseas . On arrival at Singapore international airport , I switched on my iPhone , thinking I could use the free wifi to check my email . Not knowing that I have my cellular button switched on in my iPhone , Vodafone straightway download all email and rubbish without using the free wifi. Realising that my cellular was on, I immediately switched it I off . But the damages have been done . For that few seconds , I was charged $268 for international roaming and data download. Even though I did not have a data plan with Vodafone . It was an expensive lesson . I managed to ask TIO to involve. Due to the fact that I was able to argue that I did not have a data plan , Vodafone said it normally allows casual download for non data plan customers , TIO managed to split the charge 50/50 . Damn expensive lesson to learn.

  • I had intended that for my upcoming excursion to China that I would activate on my Vodafone, their well vaunted $5 per day overseas roaming facility that was supposed to give (I don't remember exactly) either unlimited or a generous daily limit. Well, it looks like I've missed the boat; Vodafone have ripped the guts out of it during April. Firstly, my existing "plan" no longer "qualifies" to buy this add-on. Only the high-end "old" plans, plus new plans, can now buy the $5 per day add-on. Secondly, even if I still was permitted to buy this service, the overseas data and telephony that I would be entitled to each day is no longer generous. It is only the daily pro-rata equivalent of my domestic Oz limits that would apply. That is useless. When not travelling, most of my phone & data use are done via home & office phones & computers, or via WiFi. When travelling this all changes and nearly ALL my daily telephony + data needs have to go thru my iPhone. Merely getting 1/30th per day of my monthly Australian allowances will not come close to what I need! Hopeless.

Buying local cards over there is not joyful. They ban "tethering" including being able to use my iPhone to make my own "hotspot" so that I can share data with my laptop and iPad! Why? If I purchase a 1GB card, why can't I use it up any way I see fit to do so? Outrageous, but one of my family members here has the same issue here in Australia with Amaysim on the Optus network.

Some of my data use will be down. I'm told that my access to social media such as my Facebook is BANNED in China. Can anybody tell me if I'll be able to use Viber and/or Skype while there?

  • I can confirm that you can use viber and FaceTime in China abeit the wifi speed in China is very slow . Much less than Australia , sometime it can be as low as less than 10 Mbps.

  • ASK FOR ADD ON DATA PLAN. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO ADJUST IT AGAINST DATA PLAN.
