TPG phasing out grandfathered Super Value Plan

Just got an email from TPG saying they are phasing out their super value plan.

The details:

Plan Super Value Plan Medium Super Value Plan Medium (New)
Monthly Charge $17.99 $19.99
Included Value $550.00 $550.00
Included Data 1.5GB (charged per 10KB) 1GB (charged per 10KB)
Social Networking Unlimited Part of Included Data
Excess Data 25¢ per MB (charged per 10KB) 5¢ per MB (charged per 10KB)

So while the excess data has gone down in cost a lot, the included data has also gone down a lot with the plan increasing in price.

I thought technology was supposed to get cheaper over time?!

  • ah really they can just phasing out old plans?
i have internet with them so now im paying $14.99 so it will become $17.99?

    • Same here, hope note!

  • :(

i've yet to receive the email - when's the changeover happening?

what about other discontinued/grandfathered plans such as super value starter and payg?
    https://www.tpg.com.au/discontinued-products

    • My email said "21 days notice" so for me I assume it's within 21 days.

I have no idea about other plans, but I'd imagine they'll all get the chop eventually as it sounds like Optus has bumped up prices for MVNOs.

      • +1

The Super Value Starter is also increasing by $3 from $9.99 to $12.99 for 50MB less data (now 200MB) and social networking now counts towards data quota.

  • +3

if they phase out their $1/month payg plans i would be very annoyed.

    • Me too!

      • Me too!

        • Me too!

        • Me too!

        • Me too.

      • Me three!

  • Optus probably wants customers to sign a contract with them directly… so slowing killing off all the resellers. (Just like what Telstra and Voda are doing… look at Aldi, Boost, and Lebara)

    • +3

Then Optus don't realise that they can only compete on price. If their plan is to eventually force everybody to switch then I will switch… to Telstra.

      • Hence why they lost 100000 customers this quarter.

        • +2

          "hence" means "why".

E.g. Hence they lost 100000 customers this quarter.

        • +11

He's right. Hence is plural for hen. Which is same as chicken or rooster. So he's right.

    • Vodafone killing off MVNO's has significantly reduced competition in the MVNO space..
It's now only Optus or Telstra MVNO's and since Telstra MVNO Offers start at $20/month, Optus have seen that they can bump up their profits by slightly undercutting the Telstra Offering.

      • Which Tel$tra MVNO's offer access at $20/month?

        • Telechoice Kogan offer (if it still exists)

        • Thanks. Yes it does (https://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers), 12 month contract etc. but rates/inclusions aren't too far off the increased TPG charges. Any more hikes/erosions from TPG and the departure rates will soar.

I'm amused by the Telechoice advertising spin on this: "EXCLUSIVE ONLINE OFFER, Also available in stores". So many contradictions, so little time!

Now I need to remind myself: What's keeping me with TPG…

  • +1

hmm so do current users stay on the plan? I'm still enjoying my 1.5gb…. stupid, greedy telcos

    • +1

well (profanity) tpg… i just got the email to say that I'll get less whilst paying more

  • +2

i haven't seen such an email yet from TPG …
has anyone else received / not received this email?

    • ok, so i just got an email for one of the three mobile numbers i have with them.

the old $14.99 plan they want to change to a new one $16.99 per month (that is price with internet bundled with them)

main difference is now only 1gb data (1.5gb before), and social networking is counted in the 1gb data (previously unlimited).

  • i haven't got any emails… I'm on $9.99/month plan since last year.

  • following this post. Haven't received email yet.

  • I havent received this email for either of my 2 phones on the $17.99 super value plan ($14.99 as I have internet with them too).

Not overly stressed - $2/month extra is minimal, and I dont think I get anywhere near 1.5gb/month data use. To change providers generally incurs a $20 SIM Fee - so might as well stay on it for now as all these MVNO's tend to change their plans/prices fairly regularly - TPG seems to be a little slower in this process.

  • +3

No email received here either, but I've always used only a tiny fraction of the 1.5gb monthly quota. Perhaps they're culling the heavy users first.

  • I also have two phones on the 14.99 (with net) plan & have not received the email.

  • +3

For those who haven't received any emails yet, it looks like when you get the message depends on your billing cycle. They won't forget about you :)

  • So it begins, it was a good run while it lasted! TPGmodified their Terms and Conditions several months back to give them the ability to change your plan with only 21days notice.

I have 4 x $14.99 plans and 2 x $9.99 covering the whole family. Pretty good for 6 phones with a total well under $100.

  • +1

Has anyone looked around for an alternative plan?
Seems to me the new TPG super value plans are still the cheapest as far as the inclusions go.
Tempted by the Amaysim As You Go plan with 10GB data pack…(I was on the $9.99 TPG plan, used most of the data quota but didn't use anywhere near the call quota)

    • +1

hard for me because i have unlimited adsl with them.
i really like their unlimited, slow but hey its unlimited i dont have to worry

  • +1

Ah damn, have 3 phones on that plan.. May make the switch to vaya

  • I received the email and I'm on the $9.99 per month plan. I regularly used more than 50% of data per month but never went over but don't use much of the call quota. I'll have to shop around and look at other options

  • +1

The customer service at TPG is terrible…I had my mobile with them about 6 months ago and the deal then was average (especially data)!!! I moved over to Vaya and not only is the customer service 10 times better the deals are much better too…Now is the time to change. I get the same as your old deal but slightly better with $650 of calls at $18/month.

    • I moved over to Vaya and not only is the customer service 10 times better the deals are much better too…

Are you having any issues with the 1MB data block per sessions destroying your data allocation?
That's the only thing I'm really concerned about.

      • Nope the closest I've got to using the cap is about 80% but I use the wifi when at home.

        • +2

What did you usually use on TPG ? I'm worried that the 1MB data blocks will make me run over because I usually use 80-90% of my data.

        • The 1MB blocks are a bit of a bitch. It's the 30th today so I can give you my figures for this month.

          My phone - 0.91GB used
Vaya usage meter - 1.11GB/1.5GB used

It's really bad when you goto areas with poor reception or go on a train as you constantly get disconnected/reconnect to the network and get hit with 1MB charges. In the city is bad too as you are constantly reconnecting from 4G/3G and burning MB. It's pretty crap but I haven't gone over yet thankfully, I would say look at the Telechoice Kogan offer if you are concerned as they are Telstra network and per KB billing too! =)

oh and be careful if you run Speedtest app on 4G with full bars it will use 111MB for 1 test that takes less than 30secs lol found that out this month.

  • +1

I guess TPG have a different definition of 'grandfathered' than the rest of the world.

  • In Aus technology does not go cheaper. It's stupid but the truth

  • +2

You can really only rely on extended grandfathering (>36 months) with the 3 telcos

You're unlikely to get any extended grandfathering with an MVNO because their costs are subject to negotiation with the telcos every few years.

They simply can't absorb the extra cost because they are charged specifically on usage whilst the big telcos own the infrastructure and the variable cost to supply to the service is negligble.

    • +2

Makes sense. However it sucks how some of our mobile offerings have become less competitive over the years, not more.

  • Taking inflation into account isn't $1 three years ago the equivalent of around 92.5 cents today?

  • +1

I am going to move to the telechoice $20 deal

$500 calls ($50 less than tpg)
    1gb data (same as tpg)
12 month plan (tpg is month to month)
Unlimited telechoice to telechoice calls (same as unlimited tpg to tpg calls)

But the main bonuses will be:

Telstra network coverage (over tpg Optus coverage)
    Unlimited text
3rd month is half price ($10 saving will cover most of my tpg port out fee)
    No crappy initial deposit

    Downside:

Getting charged from cap for voicemail retrieval

    http://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers

    • Same price & similar inclusions to TPG offer. There are a couple of catches though:

      • 12 month contract.
      • Excess usage is 250/GB vs 50/GB on the new TPG plan.
      • Restricted access to Telstra network (but probably better than Optus)
  • Do the new plans include international calls like now?

  • -1

Yes, technology does get cheaper over time for the producer/supplier, the consumer never gets the price passed down, welcome to the land of business and profits.

  • Damn , grave news …. but the problem with vaya is that I don't think they include international calls

  • +1

Bugger. I don't know what I'm going to do now.

Vaya have dodgy data rounding & no international calls
Liveconnected are really expensive & no international calls
    Telechoice want a contract.
    Exetel mobile are really expensive.

Probably gonna have to stay put and cop it on the chin :(

    • I would rather pay anoher $10 and be done with on Telstra instead.

    • I need 1 -1.5 GB data with price $10. Then add $116 for Skype for 1 year. It should be okay.

  • All the plans the MVNOs offer have decreased in price over time.

The thing is that the telcos won't allow the MVNOs to keep offering 3G plans whilst also offering 3G/4G plans.

So really the reason why it feels like we're getting shafted is because the value add of "4G" corresponds to a larger price increase than the value most of us put on it.

Another consideration for Telechoice vs Vaya is the telstra wholesale 7.2mbps cap - http://www.zdnet.com/telstra-drops-cap-on-wholesale-3g-70000…

Whilst telechoice is only 3G the removal of the cap should allow speeds up to 42mbps - comparable with Optus 4G

    • I personally haven't seen 3G (HSDPA and HSPA+) that can go more than ~12mbps though, whereas 4G allows faster speeds most of the time.
Optus 4G is terribly slow compared to the other 2, but can still manage to reach 15mbps minimum in Sydney city. (and at this very moment using Speedtest on my Virgin 4G is 50.35mbps, which is not bad, and I live in the cbd so I'd say there are quite many people sharing a tower)

Anyway, I don't think speed really matters that much when you only have like 1 or 2GB to use a month. (as long as it's not too slow like below 1mbps)

    • Whilst telechoice is only 3G the removal of the cap should allow speeds up to 42mbps - comparable with Optus 4G

lol. Telstra 3g averages ~4-5mbits while Optus 4G averages ~15mbits.

  • i haven't got the email yet, i'm assuming it's because my billing cycle isn't til the first week of the month

just wondering.. those of us with the bundled discount (mine is 2x 14.99).. we will lose that bundled discount right? like i mean there will no longer be any bundling discounts with these increased grandfathered super value plans.. ie our monthly bill will increase by $5 per account instead of those that weren't bundled which is only a $2 increase per account

    • nope. We still get our bundled discount in the new plans. I have the same 14.99 (after bundle discount), and in the email it quotes "17.99 ($19.99 when not bundled with TPG Broadband)" for the new price hike.
Still pretty good value because of the international voice calling inclusion. (No mention of removing it)

      • hmm okay so it's only a $3 increase per month for us.. and yeah the only reason why i'm on it (and will most likely stay on it) is cos it's still the best option for international calls inclusion

i've yet to find any in the last 3 years that has come close :/

  • I'm in the same boat at your guys. My daughter and I are on this plan. Have moved my wife and son to Vaya since early this year. So far, all good. No issues.

It looks like I may move us all to Vaya so that we get free Vaya to Vaya calls. The Power Plan 18 (V2) costs $18/mth with $650 talk/text and 1.5GB data. Not too bad.

  • Damn, I was expecting this because previously I saw mail from TPG that they could change the plan with prior notice.
I have two mobiles with them, was very very satisfied with the value for money. Now have to shop around.

  • -2

You can get Telechoice problem is you will be contracted for 12months minimum, not ideal, and no international calls. Same with Vaya/LC.

TPG is the monopoly when it comes to under $20 (getting close to be more than this), with international calls with data etc

    • Telechoice includes international calls.

      • Who can offer no contract month to month include international under $20 apart from TPG? you tell me?

        • Aol

  • Odd, no email of discontinued Super Value Plan, but ave received an email regarding the discontinuation of Voicemail (if not used within 120 days)

    • VM was turned off day 1.

  • yeah the same, I got the email today about the price variation.. except I have TPG unlimited ADSL2+ for home as well so my mobile now is going up from $14.99 to $16.99

I still find it better value for money.

    • +1

got the email today, not happy :(

i m looking for 2GB data for $10 if possible, then i will combine with skype unlimited, it should work

  • +3

same not happy changing to vaya $18 can't be any worse I contacted them to try to get my $20 deposit you leave just in case you go over but they won't refund it I complained to ACCC more people should get on board and put a complaint in

I agree Billybob1978 the customer service is horrible they don't care

    • What's their reasoning not to refund the $20? Not really a "deposit" then is it?

      • there reasoning is basically to bad, there customer service is bad, i thought it was a deposit but
speaking to the telephone ombudsman they said if they dont give this refund then they can act and try to get this money back so we will see what happens

    • Just got my notice too. Any feedback on Vaya's service? Reception, Customer Service…

      • +1

Reception will be identical to TPG cause they both resell Optus.
Customer Service 0- well there's a lot of complaints, but in my experience it's been as good as I expected given the budget rates…

  • I know TPG charged $11 phone number porting fee. Would this be waived if I don't want to continue on their terrible new plans? Is charging this fee legal?

    • Will we still be charged this if we port out within the 21days notice period as per the email?

  • Question: Does the extra charge 5c per MB come out of the Included Value or does it charge separately?

    • It'll be charged separately just like it is with every other plan.. The "included Value" is all marketing bollocks just like with every other plan.

  • I got this email yesterday :(. Should change to Vaya. Has more data but do I really need that extra half a gig

  • Received my notice today but I am happy to stay for $2 more as it's a decent plan.
However my wife uses social networking a lot and we have no idea how much data it uses because TPG just records it with a 0 MB value.

Guess we monitor it as TPG don't have a limit with associated alert - well, not that I could easily find!

    • +1

What phone does she have? You may be able to set a mobile data limit.

  • She has iPhone 4S and I don't believe they track against a data limit. Looks like i will be checking the iPhone at regular intervals to get an idea of total data usage before I go looking at moving off TPG.

    • Ah ok, not an iphone user myself.. I had just noticed on the later Android versions you can set a warning level and disable level for your mobile data usage.

  • +2

I have changed to Vaya, customer service so far was much better than TPG. TPG charged me $11 administration fee for number porting. I checked their terms & condition it states that they MAY charge a fee if porting the number!! However, they did not mention about refund of the $20 prepayment outside of included value. Also, they said if I wish to view the previous invoices, I can log on to the TPG myaccount!! Which is nonsense, because they have cancelled my account login as soon as I ported my number!! I am going to lodge complain to TIO if they do not refund my $20!
