A sad day, What to do when wallet is stolen? Advice please

So I was @ the gym taking a shower and left my wallet in my bag (zipped up)

After a 1 minute shower, i was left with an open bag and a missing wallet.

This was @ the gym and obviously no CCTV footage there.

I have done the normal stuff such as report it to police, admin staff (for footage), cancel all credit cards, replaced medicare.

I have yet to see the RMS (for drivers licence) and Uni for new concession card.

Anything ozbargainers will do @ this situation?
Also can i prevent any identity theft from occurring? I dont want to find another person called me in the future stealing all my stuff/framing me for crimes/ using my details to cross international borders.

(I'm crying even more after realising my events cinema card was in there and I had accumulated to get 1 free movie….)

I'm also crying at that last line : (

Remember people lose shits all the time and wallets are one of them. Chances are that you don't have to worry about 'higher' identity theft crimes, as long as you can prove that you're yourself.

Well yeah but how are bowel movements relevant here?

May I ask which suburb this gym is at? I've started going gym and used to feel safe about leaving my wallet in my bag.. now I will rethink that twice.

Learn from OP and always be pessimistic.

why would you leave your phone/wallet ANYWHERE not in your possession?

depending on how busy your gym was, surely they have videos in the common area and you may be able to pinpoint someone who entered/left the room where your bag was?

    • Yeah my gym has cameras everywhere (it's one of those 24hr places so i guess they have to) but they don't have them in the change rooms (obviously). They actually made a point of telling me when i signed up that they can check footage if your stuff goes missing. I think it's mainly because they use pigeon holes for lockers…nevertheless, surely they could pick up you going into the locker and then anyone else who came out before you came out screaming 'Who stole my 1 free movie?!?!?'

Stupid question, but did you definitely leave it in your bag? 60 seconds into a zipped bag sounds pretty quick.
If you did and it's gone, take a deep breath and relax. You've cancelled your cards, not much else you can do except look after it a bit better next time.

  • Never give up hope! My wallet was stolen a few years back - it turned up weeks later in a local park with the cash and credit cards missing. Some feels in getting back all my other cards & ID.

    • My purse got stolen too about 3 years ago.I was tutoring at a private school at the time. 9 months later, got a call from the principal that they've found my purse. All my debit, credit cards, IDS, 10x 2hr full fare metlink ticket …etc were still in there. The only thing missing was the $5 note and maybe a couple of coins. All up maybe $8. I was even able to exchange my soggy metlink ticket for 9x 2hr full fare ones at one of the metro customer service desk .
But better be safe than sorry. Make sure you cancel all your bank cards, report your ids as lost and get new ones.

  • Change your passwords for online access too. And secret questions

Disguise yourself as a cleaner or janitor. Hang around gym locker room until you identify the thief. Follow him home. Alert bikies.

The 1 free movie really hits hard man. I feel for you.

  • Sorry to hear it got stolen :(

This was @ the gym and obviously no CCTV footage there.

Are you sure there's no CCTV footage? I'd think a secure gym would be likely to have it.

Quickly log onto Event cinemas and book your free movie online!!

  • Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George gets all bitter after thinking someone stole his glasses from the change rooms of the gym, when in fact you later find out that he's left them on top of the lockers all along.

    • OP should check above the lockers?

  • Check the Gym Bins/Garbage, they probably don't care about anything except $$$, credit cards… and ofcourse your events cinema card will be gone.

But atleast you'll be able to recover less important things like your IDs, License, etc

People still have wallets? I just use a money clip … .

  • I once had the horrible experience of losing my wallet. I also made the mistake of carrying everything with me.

I couldn't get a new license without using a credit card, and I couldn't get new credit/bank cards without a license . They wouldn't accept my birth certificate or medicare card since it didn't have a photo id.

Now I carry the bare minimum with me, id, debit card, opal card and work pass, while leaving everything else at home.

    • The question is, how did you manage to retrieve them all?

      • I had to throw away my dignity and borrow money off friends to pay for basic weekly expenses. I borrowed about $500+ before I got everything back (close to 2 weeks without anything). I couldn't even make a branch withdrawal since I didn't have sufficient ID.

I now keep my high limit cc, 28 degrees card and spare debit card at home, so this won't happen again if I lose my wallet.

        • Make sure you've applied for 28 degs shopper's protection. They'll pay you $200 if your card is stolen.

  • use the 'find my wallet' app

    • download ram from the internet

      • You need to delete the virus System32 from the C drive first.
