Where to fly for a holiday in late November?

My uni exams finish Friday 21st November and I was thinking of going on a trip with my girlfriend. Don't have all the money in the world since we're students so I was wondering what good deals there are available around this time.

Saw this deal to Europe (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143752) which looks AWESOME but unfortunately the dates don't suit me since they are before my exams. Really keen to fly anywhere. Particularly interested in Europe (London, Paris, Rome, Spain, etc.) as well as Asia (Japan, Korea). But not North America since we went there last year.

Thanks in advance for your tips.

  • Are you sure the dates don't fit? I'm in a similar situation, and I had a decent price departing Perth 24 Nov. It might be worth playing around. In particular, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve seems to be cheaper as well for coming back (if you can spend that much time away from Australia).

  • Those places you nominate have very different climates in November. What would you prefer climate wise, or is the destination the most important. Flying into LHR is expensive, suggest if Paris, go there first and take the train across, much cheaper and puts you in central London with all the public transport and more comfortably. Maybe go via SIN. HKG will be cooler in Nov/Dec.

You need to leave asap > exams as flts get more expensive after that. And, as suggested, people flying on Christmas Day can get a good deal.

    • Yea I'll definitely be leaving asap after exams (any date after 21 Nov is good).

I do prefer a warmer climate (since US east coast was freezing last holiday) but destination is more important. It's just that I'll be starting work next year and I want to go on a BIG holiday since I doubt I'll be able to fly again for a while. I've been to North America but have yet to go to Europe and Asia (apart from China/Vietnam where I have family there).

Oh btw I live in Melbourne, are flights cheaper in other states and so I have to take a domestic flight first?

  • Southern Europe is cheaper and warmer (maybe not warm), Spain Portugal, Greece, Italy

Try entering Europe by flying into Athens via ?
Return via SEAsia to thaw out.

  • Cheap Jetstar flight to BKK and then onto Norway with Norwegian Air?
there are some quite good fares here in TRAVEL section. Also one from SIN to Paris and Dublin return to MEL for about AU800 with Etihad from memory. just have to go to SIN cheaply first. Worth searching. JoyV

  • It will be cold in UK end of November!

  • Ibiza is the UK students preferred destination. All of the Balearic Islands are good at that time of year though.

  • Pass on Korea. It's boring.
Anyway, that time of year is good for Thailand, and you can always get cheap airfares.

  • I agree with bohn Thailand / Vietnam area weather is great that time of the year. AirAsia 'Melb. to Saigon', 'Saigon to Bangkok' (DMK airport) and 'Bangkok to Melbourne'. Or if the connections are better for you, do Bangkok first, then Saigon to Melbourne. Free 30 day visa on arrival stamp Thailand, but VOA Saigon $$'s (still cheaper than Aust Embassy) Food and Hotels in Saigon very very cheap. Food in Thailand cheap, and hotels not as cheap as Vietnam, but still good value.

  • Japan. There are usually Jetstar sales for that period, up until around mid-December. You can usually get some pretty good return deals and fares go on sale around September for November - Early December. It'll be the beginning of winter so a bit chilly, but not too cold to stop you from doing anything. Also, it's before Christmas so there'll be plenty of illuminations for you to check out. And some festivals are on around the place at that time. :)

  • Bali! I just came back from Bali last week and we stayed on the east coast at Candidasa. The place is not well-known among tourists, but we had a beach front villa at half the price of what we would otherwise pay in Seminyak.

The service was exceptional, food was awesome and plenty of areas around to explore. http://ministryofvillas.com/villas/villa-stella

You can book your flight tickets early so that you don't end up paying the last minute prices.

  • Malaysia ? Dubai

  • So I finally figured out where to go!

Going to be flying to Japan and spending 10 days there. Then from Japan, I'll fly to London. Another 10 days. Eurostar to Paris. Another 10 days. And finally flying to Italy to explore Florence, Venice and Rome. Another 10 days and hopefully spend New Years Eve in Rome as well. Then flying back to Australia.

Any tips if this is doable or other places I should/shouldn't go?

    • I loved Japan, you should see this long-running whirlpool thread for advice and a bunch of tips/etc. You should build an itinerary and then post it there, then let someone critique it (probably the user named A777, he's Japan-crazy). They will help you get the most out of that leg of your journey.

Where do you land? Osaka, Tokyo? If it's Osaka, you can visit a bunch of different cities that are pretty close (Kyoto, Nara, etc), but you'll probably want to see Tokyo, too. Assuming you land in Tokyo, you could probably do 4-5 days there, (activate a 7 day rail pass after 3 days), then go via bullet train west to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, other cities (maybe Hiroshima if you can squeeze it in - a great city). Then the rail pass would last until you go back to Tokyo (assuming exit Tokyo).

There's way more to it than that, and you should plan what you want to see the most.
