Free Shopping List Application for Aussies, Both in iOS and Android

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I bought a earphone from HN a few month ago because it was "incredible low price" as people described in ozbargain. Now the earphone is in my drawer with dust on it, because I've already had another two.

I wish to have something different. I want to figure out what I really need first, then that "something" can help me to find whether there are any deals available.

I am a software engineer and I spent several months trying to implement that idea. Now I finished the initial version of it. I call it Smart Cart.

Smart Cart is shopping list application. You write down what you need, and Smart Cart will search for you what is current on sale in Coles and Woolworth. It's ideal for grocery shopping. I wish to get some feedback from you guys and I will consider to add some other providers if possible.

It is free in App Store and Google Play. I put a little Ad on that hoping to cover my server cost every month. But it wouldn't annoy you too much.

Worth a try. BTW cool story on the apps history.

      Thanks. It's a real story :)

From the iTunes Store screenshots, the app looks pretty amateurish, but I applaud your efforts and good luck with your venture!

    • I also noticed his wifi reception could be better

    • +1

In terms of UI design, I should admit I am amateur. The application was initially designed as a web application then I decided to create the native mobile app. If there was enough interest, I might considering ask some one to do proper UI design.

  • Good concept, but the categories don't seem to be well populated. For example if you search for "deodorant" or "body spray" there's not many responses, particularly in comparison to how many products are in that section on the supermarket shelf…

    • +5

      Thanks for the comments.
The app wont list all the available products in supermarket. It only lists those are "on special". I got this list from Coles and Woolworth websites, so should be accurate.

This concept has a great potential and room for improvement

      Thanks for the feedback :)

  • Design could be a little better, spacing between nav and searches is slightly overlapping. Perhaps as you search, recommendations or similar searches could appear? So far a lot of the things I'm searching for aren't up on there, but I understand it's still at the early stages of development. Other than that, I think you have a really great idea going there :)

    • "recommendations or similar searches could appear", this is a great feature. Will consider it in future versions. Thanks.

Sounds interesting but ESET has flagged this with a Leadbolt.D threat. on Android.

    Is this a false positive?

I really want to see this work.

  • +4

Great attempt. I know its made for Coles and Woolies, but can Getprice or Shopbot be brought into the picture for products that are available outside Coles or Woolies at a lower price or currently on a promotion - just a suggestion.

    • Thank you. Will investigate Getprice and shopbot.

  • Pretty cool app, ui is lacking but the idea is good.

  • Great idea.

can implement this on your app or create a new one :)

    Great concept,

I haven't downloaded it yet, however I was looking for an application that performed this, plus a number of other functions yesterday.

Here's an idea of what I was looking for that you may wish to consider as future features.

    1) Relates to your original reason for the app. I'm guessing like many OzBargainers, I stockpile non-perishables when they're on sales. For me this is usually things like Nappies, Washing Powder etc. I have a store room that is separate from my unit and that's where I store most of these purchases, so I wanted an app that I could use to track what I've got in Storage. The really handy thing here would be the ability to scan a barcode and enter the quantity. I'm not rushing to inventory everything in use in the pantry etc, but I understand that some peeople go to that extent so they can understand what they've got when looking at specials.

    2) For the above it'd be great to be able to enter teh purchase price and per unit price (i.e. cost per 100ml's, cost per sheet etc.)

    3) Ability to sync data between iOS and Android apps.

    4) Ability to share lists with other family members.

I discovered both "Out of Milk?" and "Prep and Pantry" and they do the what's stored where side of things quite well, however the biggest problem is that they don't recognise a vast majority of the barcodes that I scanned for Australian products and they don't link to deals in Australian stores like your app is.

    • +1

Thanks for the valuable comments. Barcode and sharing are definitely something I want to do in the future!

    Nice…

    • +2

well you know when jv says nice that speaks volumes. well done OP.

  • Downloaded the Android version and will give it a go!

It might not replace my own shared shopping list (so the wife and I can coordinate!), but it would be interesting to see how it crawls for prices!

    Hi Rep,

So I've downloaded and tried the app out on my phone. Here are some comments:
+ Great effort, small size download
+ UI could be a little better, but overall okay for free
+ Great to also see the image of the product
    - Old Coles logo
    - Spelling errors i.e. 'Wollies'
? Would be better to also include ALDI
? Would be better to have ability to save lists, voice recognition
Great try, but look into the best free shopping list app on google play for more of what you should include.

    • Great try, but look into the best free shopping list app on google play for more of what you should include.

Looks like he got the yellow bit right, or close enough!

    • Thank you!
ALDI will be in the list if I am going to invest more time on this App.
List is already save in your device. It will be nicer if it is saved in cloud and share with family members. I'll consider this feature.

  • I'll give it a go.

Please consider adding an option to remove Ads for say $1 to $2 - I've got store credit to burn!

    • my perception was that OZBargainers want to save every cents ;) is your store credit also from ozbargain :D

      • I still have $163 left over from last years kit kat competition, plus I have an ongoing $30 per month from Telstra so do many many other people ;-)

        • Is that recharge credits on the prepaid encore? I must try this!

        • Yep, a $30 recharge = $30 credit that you can spend in the Google Play Store
          Info

I recently had over $160 accumulated and went on a spending spree.

There is a $20 limit per item.

  • Worth giving it a try.
    Thumbs up OP!

    • Thanks :)

I can see why the idea behind such an app might be useful for some, but I fail to understand how comparing grocery items from Coles and Woolworths will prevent you from buying another set of earphones from Harvey Norman?

    • Actually you are correct :D

      • Well, great idea and app nonetheless. Keep up the good work.

  • +1

Whens the Windows Phone version coming?

    • Wouldn't take long if there are enough request. I only knew very few people using Windows Phone…..

  • Good idea - there are some things that I will only buy when they're on special. Coffee, razor blades etc.

It would be good to be emailed an alert when particular products come up for sale.

    • +1

Already have too many emails in my mail box ….

    • +2

@Matt88, lassoo.com.au has this feature. You can create an alert for when the product is on sale.

      • Thanks - I'll check it out

  • +1

Wow. Love the idea and concept… mainly because I was about two weeks from finishing up my own app that does the exact same thing haha.

Keep up the good work though! ;-)

    • What a coincidence!

    • I had something in mind myself. But yeah still there on the Drawing table. My one would have historical charts..

      And would be cross platform.

  • how about add staticice.com.au

    • Had a quick look at their website, I am not allowed to use their data in my application :(

  • Downloaded it and I really like it! I only shop at Coles and Woolworths when certain items are on special (and for a select few items that are not sold at Aldi) This app is perfect for me. Thanks for this :)

    • I am glad it helps :)

  • How can u click "show more" .. :((

    • Sorry, what do you mean? "show more" option is in the top savings page in which you can see at most 500 promotions from Coles or Woolworth, ordered by the discount. It pretty much covered all the half price items in both supermarkets.

      • 'hippies' is correct. When I go to Top Savings and scroll to the end, there is a 'Show More' button which only appears when you drag the screen 'up' and is not really clickable.

  • Great app, would it be possible to list everything? Usually I don't know that I need something until I see it super cheap.

    Hence why I'm here..

  • Does this app include other stores like?

    aldi

    etc..

  • +1

Is it possible to scan an item that I am running out of and the app is able to read the scan and recognise the item ?

  • great idea. should give it a try!

  • Suggestion: Use transparent images for icons.

  • +2

Oh yeah, Aldi is a must.

    This is OzBARGAIN afterall. ;)

  • Great app, seems easy enough to use. I will definitely be using it on a regular basis, cheers

  • +1

    Needs a Windows Phone app.

  • Awesome. I keep telling my sister that I want an app like this. But I have zero app-making know how, so I'm glad you did it for me!

  • I was wondering how did you get access to the Coles and Woolies catalogue data? Do you have to copy everything manually or do they offer a data feed somehow?

App is an awesome idea, keep it up for us ozbargainers!

  • I have been waiting for something like this for a long time! Thanks

  • Sounds like an interesting concept, will give it a try!

  • great one mate…
i always wanted someone to come up with this app..

    kudos for the effort..

  • Would be good to be able to use this from a website as well

  • Very good idea, Fox!

Is there a way to add IGA & maybe Farmer Jack's?

I know- probably tough if a shop is regional, but no harm asking?

I wish you much success with this app! Looking good so far, if the previous opinions are any indication,

    :)

  • doesn't support my NEXUS 5 or Z Ultra

  • May I suggest to include the option to filter/ rank the search results based on price/ savings, etc.

    • It's currently rank by savings. I am thinking to categorising the promotions so it will be easier to find the right thing.

  • Fantastic app! Thanks op!

    Suggestions: can you add

    • item categories, I.e detergents, soups, condiments, diary etc etc?
    • instead of waddling through a massive list of text, can there be an alternative option to have the list viewed in box tiles with an image of the item visible (similar to the app page with app icons with small text underneath - ios) so we see what the items look like without tapping the + icon at the end.

    Cheers!

    • We're thinking of exactly the same thing :) I will try although it may be slow. Since this is just my hobby project.

  • Very cool app. Just if you're interested, I'm finished my degree in design computing this year. My major being UI/ux design. Let me know if you want any help with this. I would work for free as I need some stuff for my portfolio.

    • Send the OP a PM.

    • Would be great if you can help me on the UI. I am currently working on categorising the promotions and might need a layout overhaul on that page. Please shot me an email at [email protected] and let's talk about details.

      Thanks

      • Not a good idea to leave email publicly.
You might want to PM this message?

  • installed and fired up the app on android and immediately I get an audio ad!
A man's voice: "SHAKE YOUR PHONE TO GET THIS APP NOW!!!!" Then a popup to "BUY" or "DISMISS"
I'm not impressed, neither is the missus who got woken up by it…
