Best way to get rid of my DVD and Blu-Rays

Hi all

Was looking for some suggestions on the best way to get rid of my Blurays and DVDs while maximising their value. I have about 300 or so left after a big sale via my Facebook to friends.

I'm getting rid of them simply because with digital services I just don't watch them anymore and see no reason to keep them. They're just devaluing and taking up room in my house and in 6 months I'll be moving into a new smaller place and need to downsize anyhow. While money isn't the main driver for the sale, it doesnt mean I don't want to get good value from them.

Clearly I could just dump them at a Cashies and get 50c each.

I could sell them on Ebay with with a few hundred discs it'd take a while and EBay's fees will kill it for me.

DO you think it might be worth dropping a list on Gumtree and let people just make me an offer? If I did that I'd probably be low balled and scammed to death.

If I did the gumtree thing and set prices what do you think would be generally reasonable? $2 a DVD, $5 a bluray?

Any other thoughts?

Taking into account the time and effort it would be to sell 300 discs seperately. Id just make a spreadsheet of all the movies and sell them as bulk sale only. Sell them on Gumtree $600. Or if you have some really good sort after movies, break them into bundles and price them accordingly. Latest stuff 20x movies is $150. 100x crap sold stuff = $150 etc. If you sold them individually you will be stuck with all the crappy ones and spend most of your time at the post office. Buying movies is always going to be a money pit, just bite the bullet and walk away, learn from the experience.

    • I was thinking of doing bundling as well. Maybe break them up in to themes like superhero flicks, Van Damme flicks, chick flicks etc. Maybe in lots of 10.

      • I would sell on their value rather then the theme. 1 good movie grouped with 9 bad ones it worth as much as the good 1 solo

Go to your local market! I hold a stall at mine (I sell general trash and treasure), but DVD stalls do extremely well.

Class them into genres in different boxes, and you will have people flocking to you. Set up a nice neat stall, borrow some foldable tables off friends, bring some sheets to put over the tables to make them look tidy and away you go!

Prices that sell at markets are generally between $2 - $5 each depending on the movie (single movies). Not sure about box sets, but cheap yet reasonable for you is the right price.

Incentive! Make signs that encourage people to buy more, while giving them a discount ($5 each or 3 for $10….whatever you want to do!)

You pay once or twice for a stall, a couple of early mornings, no postage, no fuss, and you'll see heaps of them go.

P.S. You would be surprised at some of the crappy titles that people buy. Sometimes the ones you don't think you will move are the ones that go first!!

    Good luck :)

    • yeah there's some sort of car boot markets on sundays near my place. Might give them a google to see how that works. Didn't think of that.

  • cashies only offer 50 cents now, i remember it was 1$ a few month back ouch.

    • I was taking a punt lol

Blu Ray's sell on eBay OK, however the time investment involved is substantial.

  • Since you're in the ACT, just sell them to these guys CEX Exchange. They seem to be giving more than 50 cents.

  • Your local facebook buy and sell page.

  • Was shocked to find out that cashiers pay $0.20 to $0.50 for a DVD (and then sell them at $4 to $5 dollars) $2-$3 for a DVD and $5 for @ bluray (which is not made up of ex-rentals) is a good price.
Easier to sell in bulk rather than individually, would have had a look at your collection if you were not that far
