Beware Cat6 cables, all of them are solid copper wire, not stranded copper wire. Solid copper wire breaks after it has been flexed a few times. NOBODY makes Cat6 patch cables with stranded copper wire, I've been looking for quite a while.

So this cable will be fine for patch cabinets and places where it doesn't get flexed, like connecting your home theatre to your modem, or for desktop PCs (in most cases).

If you use it to connect your laptop on a daily basis, you'll get a month or two out of it before one of the wires breaks. For laptop connection, Cat5e cable is available with stranded copper wire, but do take a good magnifying glass with you and check when buying, not all Cat5e patch cables are stranded. You can see the cut ends of the wires through the clear plastic of the RJ45 connector.

What bollocks, Cat 6 cable is available in both solid and stranded. Every Cat 6 patch lead that I have seen has been stranded, I would NEVER use a solid patch lead for obvious reasons and find it hard to understand why people would make such ridiculous claims. Taking a magnifying glass along to buy a patch lead!

Here are some examples - we use these extensively at work - http://www.panduit.com/heiler/SpecificationSheets/D-COSP229-…

I was almost cheering that I had finally found a source of stranded Cat6 patch cables - until I read the spec sheet you linked. It says lots of strange things, like "Category 6 performance", not actually stating CAT6 except where it says "Category 6 Class E" - and that claim also appears dubious, as Wikipedia says "no legitimate Category 6e standard exists": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat6#Category_6e

It also says "These patch cords utilize 28 AWG conductors which do not meet the 22 to 26 AWG conductor size of patch cable referenced in ANSI/TIA-568-C.2, resulting in an increased attenuation de-rating value of 1.9", and later says cable diameter is 3.8mm. It sounds to me like these aren't really Cat6 cables at all. Do they have the plastic separator running the length of the cable, keeping the four pairs separated by at least 1mm, as required for the cross-talk specification of Cat6?

P.S. the cables mentioned in the deal above, explicitly say they are solid copper.

The second spec sheet you linked is more believable, with 6mm cable diameter and the correct wire gauge. But it is the same company as the first spec sheet, which isn't believable, so I tend not to trust it.

I have been to several cable wholesalers, wanting to buy 305m reels of cat6 stranded cable. Every one of them tells me "doesn't exist, it's either solid or you have to use Cat5e"

The first cable that I linked to is a Category 6 cable but uses a 28awg cable and is under half the thickness of a standard cable which allows you to pack many more cables into cable managers and gives you a neater patch panel.

The second cable are the ones we used to use which are the standard thickness cables.

Panduit are one of the leading manufacturers in the world of cable management systems and this includes patch cables, fibre equipment, racks, cable management, patch panels and so forth so your comment "that this company isn't believable" shows that you have no idea about cabling nor standards.

Cable wholesalers sell cables for fixed installations not for making patchleads, you don't make your own patchleads especially with Cat6 as they are hard to terminate and many will not pass proper testing. You can order in stranded cable on rolls from manufacturers like Panduit and Krone to name two or you can do what everyone else does and buy them pre-made and tested.

          Cat 6 Stranded 305m roll of cable - $241 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1x-305m-Cat-6-Cat6-Blue-Premium-M…

          Cat 6 Stranded patch leads - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cables-To-Go-22806-20ft-Usa-Cat-6…

And Krone patch leads are stranded and as pointed out so are Panduit and these two have a lot of the structured cabling market.

????? It clearly states stranded cables on the page!

        • I do apologise for doubting you, it looks like you were correct. I have found that my suppliers CAN now supply Cat6 stranded: http://www.cabac.com.au/qr/C6UTPS

You are right that I don't know anything about structured cabling, I am an engineer and I often have to use things in ways which weren't their intended purpose. Like feeding three RF signals (not data)over 40m, for which Cat6 should be adequate. I went to my regular suppliers, and they told me "no stranded". That was a year or two ago, maybe it was new then and they didn't know about it, maybe they were just lazy and didn't check their catalogs to see if it was available.

Does the 3.8mm cable have a separator in it? It doesn't sound like there is enough room inside the cable jacket!

        • It clearly states stranded cables on the page!

It does, but when I clicked through the manufacturer's link, their website makes no mention of stranded cable. They do have lots of banners about their "bare soild cooper conductor" cable (their spelling). I took the manufacturer's word over the retailer's word.
