Should I buy a weekend car?

Just wanted to get your opinion on this … should I buy a weekend car?

I work in the city, have my main property and an investment property. My wife has her car which she drives on a daily basis to work and I take public transport.

Not exactly the best use of money which could go into the mortgage instead, but I'm at the point where I don't really care about that anymore and just feel like having some fun.

Thoughts?

    Bang for buck = wrx

    Mid-life crisis = boxter

    Bogan = fj cruiser

Gesture of achievement = any merc amg

    Drifter = classic import

    Tree hugger = Prius

    Shopping car = Korean car

    Look at me wanna-be = 911

My 2 cents…some may not agree

Im not being racist in any way, but I have noticed that Asian people (I am assuming you are Asian) categorise people based off their choice of cars.

I hardly think only bogans drive FJ cruisers, I don't think everyone with an AMG do it to affirm their success, they are just good cars. Also a 911 is not a look at me car, its perhaps the opposite of this, its designed to slip under the radar; its a solid car, well made car that looks the same as every other 911, unless you get a GT3 RS. If people want you to look at them, they get a lambo. Also classic import for drifting? I would hardly call an 80's or 90's high km turbo crapbox a classic. I think the only classic out of Japan is the Toyota 2000GT. Maybe in 20 years the original NSX might qualify. Not a beaten to crap Silvia.

Everything I wanted to say, but so much more succinct! I doff my cap to you, sir! :D

When the list maker can actually drive, I bet she will change quite a number of those assumptions.

This and this. Still a controversial matter in social science circles though.

But to go back to the topic. OP I reckon you should first of all consider your mortgage before purchasing your second car. Work out a responsible amount that you can part with and do not cut your finances too thin. It always pays to have some sort of a financial buffer.

        • Jaypehm your 'this and this' may not have been assilimated by you.

It seems to me that the comment - this and this' should or could be a forum topic. If this is the new disscrimation , the area of communication will have to revert back to Latin or more complex languages , with nuisances such as'

          the wine-dark sea'

I will feel ' b…' if you don't look it up if you don't know the quote. Any how, no more now, and not here, forum maybe!

And what is this. MicrA or Ozy humor?

The original MX5 and 88-92 (Mk2) CRX are considered modern Japanese classics. They even compete under that category in Australian Targa events.

The true definition of the Toyota 2000GT is now Vintage.

Any unmolested NSX is highly sought after, and also considered a modern classic.

To the OP and their weekend car requirements, I'd suggest an MX5 or S2000.

        • I have a 91 NSX and it makes a perfect weekend car. It is genuinely exciting to drive and much more reliable than European equivalents.

        • :p
          [jealousy]

      • why do you assume he is asian?
        because of his ozb nick?
        so stereotypical of u

      • If you're Asian buying a C180/C200, 318i or 320i means you made it mega millionaire (even if the model is a decade old lmao).

    • Agree with AMG, go to any hospital parking lot reserved for doctors, you would think you are at the dealership, not just any dealership, AMG dealership… I would assume most companies top position employees drives similar class.

Not sure about FJ cruiser, it's a pretty radical vehicle, people buy it mainly for looks and it's not just a plain 4WD.

    • Boring….

  • Old school muscle = stuff your environment, I want to relive my old days.

  • if you feel, you have financial security and have some vision for around 1-2 years, no issues in buying a new car for your own. There is no point in being a miser if you can really afford it and no other haunting problems. but again it depends which car you want to buy. Look for a good, reasonable, not-so-old used one.

    • Why does him being able to feel mean he will have financial security? Also, I am pretty sure if he is old enough to drive, he has had vision for a lot longer than 1-2 years. I also fail to see what poltergeist have to do with purchasing a car, unless of course you want him to buy this?

Why? If your wife has a car, then you guys can use that for your weekend travels as well. No point having two cars unless you actually need both cars.

    • +1

Yes see your point, but some people take joy out of taking their car for a drive, and I mean their own car, not the daily shopping trolley.

  • Plenty of manual warm/hot hatches that can be had for cheap these days. Good fun to take up the mountain for a quick blast!

  • If you really want one and if you are able to afford one without being tied down too much then why not. Maybe try a well maintained second hand weekend car. I bought a 370z last year just for weekend driving and have not regretted a bit. Getting some fresh air in my convertible after an average of 80 hours/week of work is refreshing.

  • Have you looked into car shares like goget or green car share? Could be a good option if you are just using the car on occasional weekends. The cost of owning and running a car is ridiculous if it isn't used that often, especially when you take depreciation into account.

He wants fun, not some POS to just use on the weekends

  • Go to your auto club , here is an racq example.

    http://www.racq.com.au/motoring/cars/car_economy/vehicle_run…

If have redraw home loan, not investment loan, rest funds there in, you earn fair interest there. When you need to have 'fun' and need car, hire one or use travel packages.
Thus you are not tied down to one type of car.
Why, sooner you clear home loan the sooner You will have more money to do what you wish. Small bites are sweet.

If it a "Rendezvous", start at home, or its overtime, pro-bone/o work, study groups, going for a massage, or have a family open arrangement.

One will have to be very clever, naïve, or dumb. So many movies to get warnings or good ideas.

Of course there is an implied meaning in the question 'What type of car do you drive?' The night will depend on the answer. But I haven't tried ' None , I only use chauffer services'. I think the word starts with 'w'

  • If you want to be more independent from your wife you should definitely get one.

I'm not sure how you manage without one.

  • Used to hear this at the auctions…

"Let your money bring your happiness"

    "It's only money"

    DO ETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • I really wanted to buy something recently but struggle back and forth thinking whether I should get it or just keep the money then I got a very good (for me) advice from my friend.

You only have one life and there are some things in life that you can only enjoy at a certain age.
If there is something that you know you really want, and it is not out of your means and you can certainly afford it just get it and enjoy.

I would get the car and enjoy the drive while I am still not too old to enjoy driving. Life's short and precious, so make the most of it (within your means of course).

    That's my 2 cents. Cheers.

    • aka: yolo

      • The whole YOLO mantra is good so long you're doing it within your means and won't be affecting anyone else directly or indirectly.

        • Eh "You Only Live Online" ….

  • Weekend fun car should be a big V8 or a 4WD to go bush!!! whats the point in a "normal" a-b car (like a wrx :p )

  • OP, I would just like to say that it's good to see you contributing so much to your own discussion.
I would suggest buying something very mainstream and inconspicuous… Because clearly you don't really want to be seen or heard!!!

Weekend car, it's going to be a money pit. If you're okay with that, then go for it
