LG 500GB Portable External 2.5" HDD - $138 (+Shipping) from MWave

83

The site says "Today Only" but is under the "Deal of the Week". So I'm not sure how long this will be available at that price.

~30 cents per gigabyte is a better than average for portable storage. This might be a good deal for those hunting for a portable 500GB disk.

  • The internal disk model number is: Seagate ST950032 5AS
  • Write speed average is: 23 MB/s
  • Warranty is 2 years.

Detailed Specifications:

  • LG 500GB Portable External 2.5" HDD
  • USB Self Powered
  • 5400rpm
  • 8MB Buffer
  • Stylish glossy design / Quick and Quiet / High quality Hard disk drive / Gradation design / Easy and stable data storage

Shipping:

Road: Approx. $14.50
Pickup from Sydney warehouse: $3

Personal Note:

I bought the exact model from MWave a couple weeks ago for $160. It's an attractive, little portable drive. Comes with a dual USB cord that allows you to draw power from two USB slots if your HUB isn't powerful enough.

I've only bought twice from MWave, but each time the product was shipped the same day it was ordered, and arrived the very next morning. So they seem to on top of fulfillment.

Good luck.

$139 at Umart, which is cheaper since mwave charge a $3 "pick-up" fee, making this $141.

But how do you pick up from Umart if you live in NSW? Umart only have a physical prescence in Queensland.

Or are you implying that Umart provide free shipping for that price?

He's implying the least you can pay is $141.

Okay, $141 is the least you can pay. But if you live outside of Queensland, and especially if you live within travelling distance of MWave, is it still not a decent price to pay for a branded, warrantied 500GB portable storage device?

All I'm asking is for the context of location to be kept when evaluating the quality of this deal.

I'm standing by the original conviction I had when originally posting: that $141-$153 is a good price to pay for such a product. It is in stock, offered ubiquitously to all Australians, and from a company that (by personal experience) has fulfilled orders with professional efficiency.

Are you implying mwave can provide anywhere in Aus for less than UMart?

I don't know the Umart shipping prices off-hand, but it seems you're assuming it's cheaper to ship from mwave than it is from Umart, even though you, like me, don't know the shipping cost…

I'm assuming that at best they can beat it by a few bucks. Likely less than 2%. Which makes me think it's an OK price, but a fair way away from a bargain.

@[Deactivated]: I was not trying to make the case that this was a good deal soley because of price. I was trying to take into account factors like location, stock availability, payment options, customer service reputation, order fulfillment history, site accessibility, et al.

When I first replied to you, I was trying to communicate that it's important not to make apples-to-oranges comparisons based on price alone. That other important factors need to be accounted for; I mentioned those factors which I felt differentiated this deal in the submission description.

I agree with you that it's not a bargain, per se. But I felt, and still feel, that it is a good opportunity for anyone in the portable 500GB market when taking into account all factors (of which total-net-price is only one).

(BTW, I had contacted Tony L at the Umart Online Center previously regarding HDD shipping to ACT from their QLD warehouse. It's $16 via Australia Post. YMMV.)

  • no deal

  • I think this is a decent deal. Not voting positive because I don't have any past experience with mwave… Would love office works or other stores matches this price in NSW.

    • Officeworks will price match MWave. Sometimes they'll ask for a phone number to check the item is in stock. They will also take into account any shipping costs required to deliver the item to your address.

I can vouch that Mwave is way better than UMart for postage and for stocked items.
I've had special Umart sale deals "reneged" (twice I might add), because they prefer holding stock for locals over interstate buyers.

Took them a week later for Umart to tell me that they had no stock.
The best part was, two weeks later when they had stock they called me up to see if I would buy it.

I hate businesses that treat Internet customers like dirt and Umart is a prime example.

Don't know what dealing with Umart is like at the store front, but interstate buyers should stick to Mwave.

The deal isn't so great, if people are going to drop cash for large 2.5" portable drives, make sure it has eSATA for the future.

USB 2.0 interface is slow and is going to be superseded by the faster USB 3.0 standard, but eSATA will still be around for awhile.

  • Not bargain as this so no deal!!!

    • Philosophical question: if a bargain falls in the forest but nobody's there to catch it, is it still a bargain? :-)

Seriously, the Officeworks offer is a bargain — if you can get it. But this is a decent deal if availability is a factor in your purchase.

  • Best Price, Good Deal. By the way only one UMART store sell $139 and not all store have the stock.

  • $141+ doesn't sound great for a 1TB drive. Pretty average really.

    • cperry, it's not 1TB, this is 2.5" 500GB portable HDD.
