Witcher 3 from GOG.com - Russia Proxy AUD $23.40

100

First post from a long time lurker, please cut some slack guys :)!

GOG.com's Russia site has the preorder for the upcoming Witcher 3 for cheap. As usual you'll need a proxy to access the Russian site, such as Hola Unblocker etc. in order for it to work. This is a good deal as normally they would charge $80.99 AUD, compared to the $719.10 Ruble, which equates to about $23-24 AUD. It's understandable that GOG deserves the full price but as usual the Aussies are getting the wrong end of the deal when it comes to regional pricing.

Actually doesn't gog give you a voucher to use equal to the difference of the regional pricing? Thought it sounded like the company was doing the right thing by its users

    • +1

Correct, they give you $21.97 USD back in GOG credit so the price equals the US price. Not sure if buying from the Russian GOG site will cause any problems with region-locking, however I'd guess not since the game is "100% DRM-FREE".

Yeah but still, it's 2 games up to $5.99 and 1 up to $9.99. The Russian site is still the cheapest way to go. I respect what GOG is trying to do but a bargain's a bargain :)

      • Sure it;s a bargain - but to deny the single gaming company that I know that is trying to do what is right for its customers (DRM free, voucher for regions where prices are higher) is ethically questionable in IMO. Don't want to start an argument, but if one company deserves our cash, its CD Projekt RED (who own GOG i think)

        • I do not disagree with in the slightest. It's just that the exchange rates are messed. If GOG could equate the US price they would but they legally cannot, therefore the $21.97 worth of credit. I have bought many more games from them, in fact the reason I thought of this method was because I have nothing much left there to redeem!

        • I'm quite certain they offer bonus material according to region. In fact they said as much in that hour long 2014 Summer Conference Video.

e.g. US get cheaper prices so other countries get bonus material and extra games, etc.

e.g. RU get cheaper prices so they miss bonus material and have to get an upgrade to Beta test the New W3 Adventure game on GoG Galaxy.

They are doing Bonus material and give-a-ways according to purchase location due to regional pricing and the fact they know almost everyone these days has a VPN.

        • While CD Projekt is great, you are on the wrong site if you want to start discussing RRP versus a bargain a fellow ozbargainer has discovered, even through loop holes.

Actually I think bargains and ethics can live together in some instances - ethics is something shown quite often on ozbargain - see how much crap ozbargainers give people when they clear out a store when a bargain is present, many often state they only took one or two of a product, so other bargain hunters may purchase one for themselves.

        • Yes, thats for sharing the bargain when there are limited numbers. For digital sales of a product that there is no end to, acquiring it for cheap is something we all pounce on. If you remember a while ago a company offered free kites, and within hours they were all gone even though it was supposed to be added with a purchase. Every thing is fair game in the consumers market.

        • In this I disagree.

I'm an ethical consumer who loves bargains. So I'll purchase AU prawns on special though I may not purchase them when standard price, and I would NEVER purchase the international prawns.

I'm the type of person will head back to IGA and hand back the $10 extra they gave me in change. I believe morality, honour and ethics are important in everything we do.

        • I also remember Dick Smith having a big sale and all the staff purchasing everything.

  • That's Crazy, what a steal! :D Thanks OP!

8 months till release is a long, long time away. As for cheap pricing, countries like Russia and China tend to have cheap software to counter the high levels of piracy in those countries. It isn't a matter of exchange rates and premiums in those scenarios. For price rip off, better to compare to similar markets like UK, US, EU etc.

Aren't we Aussies supposed to be huge pirates? Where are our discounts? We suffer the opposite fate: absurd mark-ups which encourage piracy.

      • That's why standard price for Aussies atm is 20% off plus another 10% if you already own the previous two Witchers.

not entirely true it also has got to the fact that places like russia get $250 a week or so so $50 is alot of their weekly income

  • OP, did you go ahead and purchase this? Any indication that it could be locked to Russian regions only or does the pre-order already appear in your account?

    • +1

Initially it took a while to process on their end, I paid by Paypal. I was worried so I launched a support ticket, but they responded by processing the order and apologising saying they had issues with orders, should be fixed up now though!

      • Oh that's good to hear! Please post here again once the order has gone through about what you can see in your GOG account, and if there's any indication that it's ROW (region-free).

        • There's no indication that it's region-free, but it is indeed in my library like any other GOG game.

  • good price i was able to get it on steam for $21 so im pretty happy

    • +3

If you buy it through the Russian Steam store, it's currently $27.38 USD. However, you have then introduced Steam DRM for a game that comes from a company that openly rejects DRM policies.

      • I like steam i have all my games on steam.
I got it though buying it with 15 dota keys which i was able to get at 1.40 each so makes it $21 good price for me

    • +1

I shy away from buying off Steam through Proxies since if they catch you they could ban your account. I planned on buying and supporting GOG from the get-go anyways.

      • +1

Someone said they now allow you access to your games if you get banned …….. I can assure people that's false.

  • Btw I'm not sure if they will have region locking (probably not because they pride themselves on being DRM-free), but if there are they will happily refund for you through their support, just don't redeem anything from the offer!

    • Do you have a source that they are willing to offer refunds? The order comes with a "30-day money back guarantee" (if you experience technical issues), but since the game isn't out until next year that certainly won't cover you.

      • +1

I believe you can cancel anytime up until the release just contact their support, and of course don't redeem any of the bonuses.

        • You're correct, I missed this in the pre-order FAQ: "As stated in our refund policy: You can cancel pre-orders at any time before the game's release, and get your money back."

  • Id hate the barer of bad news, but I doubt it will have multilingual support, especially with the price disparity. So just a heads up if you want to take the chance.

Have a look at the FAQs here:

      8. What languages will The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt be localized in?
Full voiceover and subtitles: English, Polish, German, French, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese. Subtitles only: Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Czech, Hungarian,Latin America Spanish, Korean.

I would think it's safe to assume this applies to any version of the game, regardless of where it was bought.

      • Good point! If somehow it is I'm sure we can always change the language files around!

  • Eh I bought the Collectors edition. It's a rip-off I know, but between all these bargains and deals, I'd thought I'd pay full price for at least 1 game this year.

Plus the statue that comes with it is damn nice!

    • I'm buying three :)

1 for the desk, 1 to look at in it's unopened box, and 1 in case something bad happens to the others.

      • D: So much dedication!

        • It's the luuvvvvv!

  • Guys. GOG does not have a Russian Store. All the OP is doing is using a proxy thing to buy it at what someone would pay if they were in russia.
The refund policy only covers from my understanding technical problems with a game that cannot be fixed for support. That's the main reason for the policy guarantee in the first place.
There is no region locking - there is a geo ip in place that normally picks up your ip address (regardless of the location you set on your account).
However, no one can guarantee what will happen, once you order and once the game is available to download as there is a possibility the GOG cross platform Galaxy client will be launched in time before TW3 is launched.. It is one of 3 games that is regionally priced (the rest of same price around the world).

    • Can't wait for GoG Galaxy
