      • Splitting the tasks across multiple machines allows you to lower the spec of each ie. get an N54L running as your NAS with whatever NAS OS that will do what you need and then just get a basic little low-powered machine for your work, browsing, media playing etc…. in fact why not just keep the SFF Dell and just use that but look into juicing it up with a small & inexpensive SSD and maybe a bit more RAM & at least Win7?! This way you can let the N54L chug away 24/7 and the Dell can be switched on & off whenever you need.

        • That's what i am going to do. N54L for NAS only and NUC (i3 model) for normal daily use and media play. Hope it will work me out. Finger cross.

      • I have both 4GB RAM and 240GB Crucial M500 SSD gathering dust at home because my understanding is Win XP can't take more than 4GB RAM and SSD won't make any different in speed to motherboard of the SFF Dell. Please have a look at the specs here:

I think you'll find the SSD alone will improve the speed even with XP but also upgrading to 8Gb RAM and installing Win7 64-Bit would be your best bet and as you already have everything except Win7 it'll be a great way of getting what you want for hardly any extra cash too! Win-Win :)

        • Thanks Steve, that is definitely the way to go. Now gotta find a deal for Win7 and spend a weekend upgrading it.

The WD Red hard drive is the same at MSY, and the HD6450 graphic card is cheaper at MSY for $40.

I'm not sure if this is as good a bargain as G8 when last time they were on sale.
The G7 drops from around 279+25 shipping (scorptec). So a saving of $65.
While the G8 last time drops from 549 to 349 ($200 saving).

Maybe I should just wait longer….

    • word on the street is HP is struggling to make profit on the low end g1610T therefore prices wont be the same as before… don't know how true that is but i've spoken to 3 shops and they've advised the same :(

      • :(

the draw of these things are because it's cheap, thus the people buying them tend to be price sensitive. if HP increased the prices, these people would probably find other alternatives.

    • 4TB red is also $229 at ARC, IJK and Umart.

      I might wait as well.

  • Seagate NAS 2TB - $119
    Seagate NAS 3TB - $159

Neither of these have a 5 year warranty
It's a 3 year warranty based on the Seagate website (and other IT vendors)

    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/nas-drives…
    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/nas-drives…

    • I think WD Red is the best to buy. Depending on what you want to use it for, it can last for a very long time.
With 4x4TB, Raid 5 gives you around 10TB of storage. For many homes this is good enough for at least 5 years.

Given it will run 24/7/365, you wouldn't want a drive that fail before 5 years.

      • Gotta be careful here. If a lengthy warranty makes you feel all warm and fuzzy then go for it but to be honest I've had cheap crappy drives with 12 month warranties running 24/7 for 7+ years but I've also had super expensive 'Enterprise Grade' drives in our large arrays at work covered up to the nines with insane warranties die within a few days.

Unfortunately you just wont know how long a drive will last until it dies. Main thing is to keep your important data backed up in more than one location and just let whatever happens happen.

    • They will be 5 years, if you can't get 5 years from them (purchased from shoppingexpress), come look for us, we take care of it for you :).

      Cheers

  • If I intend to use this as a backup for photos/videos and for streaming movies, which one of these should I get? Also is RAID 1 really bulletproof? I've read it somewhere that unless you can find an identical drive to replace a failed drive, you won't be able to just plug in another drive to contiune using the mirrored raid?

Or is this only a problem with RAID 5? In which case, do any of these NAS boxes run RAID 5?

Also would anyone know what the power consumption would be for one of these running say, 2 drives?

    • Ok just realised that there is only 1 model on offer here, just that one comes bundled with a HDD. So its $458 all up for one of these plus 2 x seagate 2TB drives…

    • This is the best review for this product:
      http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page6.html

It says power consumption can be no more than 60W at peak.

Also check that link for silent fan hack.

      • Thanks for that!

    • I think I'm coming up to a decision to get the N54L + 2x 4TB seagate barracuda drives, comes up to $601.

Is there any reason not to get this config? It will only be used for storage and RAID 1 redundancy.

  • Seagate NAS 2TB - $119
    5 Years Warranty

This one is pretty value for money for $59 per TB

    9Tb in my N40L here (1,2,3,3)
    6GB
Win 8 pro runs a charm with xbmc in the background. streams 720p to all the tabs nicely,
Does 1080p if I switch off torrents, etc

  • Does windows 7 or 8 can do raid 5? What software does this?

  • Does dual-channel RAM make much of a difference over single-channel with the AMD chipset running in the N54L?

Guys, when you purchase this item with any two extra hard drive or memory don't forget to select the most expensive shipping, since shipping is free.

  • Anyone know of a good USB 3.0 pci card that will work this?

  • Lol, Microservers are so popular on Ozb that it generates so much comments which rivals Eneloop Deels!.

Haven't you heard that the pre-requisite for having an ozbargain account in 2015 is - YOU MUST OWN at least 1 HP Microserver?

  • No free shipping even with hdd purchase :(

    • which ones? should be working

  • I just checked a few forums, it seems that this model can not transcode HD Video properly, via Plex for example.

Has anyone tried streaming HD content with this?

    • I have major issues with Plex on this so I use Plex on the box as my HTPC and then use XBMC on AFTV in other rooms which is faultless for 10Gb 1080p rips.

    • exactly what I planned to do. My synology DS212J isnt powerful enough so thinking of getting one of these to run Plex however the reports on plex performance are really negative

  • can anyone comment on http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-procurve-1410-16g-1…

    vs

    TP-Link TL-SG1016DE 16 Port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch - $85

The RRP's seem inflated as I can purchase the HP for $95 most places, all i need is about 16 Gigabit ports to distribute fast connection for HD streaming/downloading, solid, reliable nu-managed

    Any feedback appreciated?

    • I have just purchased the $99 16 port procurve HP gigabit switch you linked to, from ShoppingExpress.

I have used the HP procurve gear from back when they had "lifetime warranty" (which I think HP have rescinded now - in any case there are levels of procurve gear, else how could they sell it for $99). I have used the TP-Link gear from where I needed the cheapest possible solution.

In the past it seemed to me that I need to power-cycle the TP-Link gear a little more often to get around problems, and the build quality of the HP gear looks better.

As for inflated Retail prices, you really need to judge each price on its merits - check around and use staticice - personally for me the price is right and I find ShoppingExpress really good to deal with. I have purchased both an N54L and an N40L from them previously. I really the build quality of the N40L and N54L, they are dreamy to work on - nice compact machines that you can unobtrusively install into any small spot.

  • If I was to stream wireless would 300Mbps router do or worth paying extra for 600Mbps duel band?

  • Will it be able to record 4-5 cameras using milestone? or do I need to upgrade or add any cards or ram etc?

  • If anyone purchased today and chose to upgrade RAM, I would like to buy the pre-installed 2G RAM. message me, :)

  • just bought one n54l with extra 8gb ram. Thanks OP!

  • Damn, missed this as I was doing research for OS with it (ended up deciding on Xpenology.

Guess I'll have to wait till next sale..

    • Am not sure which OS to go for… Would you mind sharing why Xpenology over others please?

      • those who like the synology interface and add ons

      • I currently have a Synology DS211j, so am use to the interface, the apps and also the iPad/iPhone apps as it makes it way easier for file management as I barely use my desktop now to do all that.

But knowing I can use the Synology OS but without the massive cost of their hardware is great, as I really want to give SHR a try for future expansion.

Sweet! Luckily I checked back here. Ordered one just then :-)

  • Appears the Kingston 8GB RAM is now Out of Stock. Suggestions?

    • I've got two pieces of 8Gb, Brand New & Unopened. It's the proper Kingston stuff I bought to upgrade my N54L and upgrade a mates however my mate hasn't bothered as he's only using his as a basic mirror NAS.

Yours for $100 per piece (plus postage) if you want it. I can list a cryptic Ad on Gumtree if you want it so you can find it easily and we'll take it from there.

      • Thanks for the offer, I have decided to leave it for now. I will juggle round the RAM from my other microservers.

      • What sort of ram is this? Might be interested..

  • Got my N54L and 2 x 4TB seagate drives. First attempt at setting up a NAS failed terribly - managed to set up a RAID 1 config but freenas wouldn't boot from USB, will have to give it another go tomorrow.

My main concern now is - do I really need the 64bit version? And also do I really need 8, 16GB ram? I've read that it's recommended to match RAM with HDD capacity, although I'm not sure of the logic behind this. Would this only benefit the heavy user, with the extra ram serving as a buffer/cache for high data transfers?

    Much confuzzled.

    • I've been told it's only RAIDZ that needs the large amounts of RAM (16Gb+) so you might be fine with less for other RAID configs.
