I don't think that this is a bargain, because these books are permanently free.

"Project Gutenberg" is a project to convert the world's out-of-copyright literature to freely-available eBooks. They have all of these books (Little Women etc) and more, in almost every eBook format, for free, on their website:

    http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/scores/top

(The link goes to their Top 100, but there's a search box in the top left if you want more. They currently have almost 46000 free eBooks available)

5 great books, but what is that "heaven is for real" shit in the image?

Moots, i know you mean well, but out of copyright, permanently free books are not a bargain. By all means mention it in the forums. These are books everyone should read, regardless of chromosomal status.

Lol. Do you know who wrote these books? Did you even read the title and description?

Don't mistaken 'Must Read Women's Classics' for 'Women Must Read.'

Did you not notice that they are all somewhat "girlie" stories? I do not see Mary Shelly or Harper Lee in the list.

I'm negging this because literature in the public domain provided free is not a bargain, because free is the regular price.
If they are handing these out in paperback form at the train station then it is a bargain.

To the rest of you guys ewwwing at the "girliness" of these titles indicate to me of close-mindedness.

I have read Wurthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice from the list and ignoring the "girliness" of the material that you guys dismiss them by, they are great reads from the perspective of looking into the society and class system of the times. The obsession and revenge itself was intriguing enough to get me through Wurthering Heights.

        • To the rest of you guys ewwwing at the "girliness"

eh? You must be hallucinating. Nobody said they were not great books.

    • The thumbnail is from the featured book on the linked page. Please mind your language.

      • Seriously? You are offended by a common English language metaphor? Or by the traditional anglo-saxon spelling of poo-poo?

        • I'm certainly not offended and have used/use it on occasion when I feel offended or am highly irritated by something. While it may be a commonly used English metaphor for some of us, it remains omitted from any modern-day English dictionary or thesaurus.

So having answered your original question as to why that thumbnail image is shown and whether or not I am offended, I'm really interested to learn the following from you: Are you offended by a thumbnail image of a featured book?

        • Yes, I am offended by that dreck, (the Heaven thing) apparently designed as brainwashing for children.
It is not the existence of suck filthy immoral propaganda that offends, so much as sneaking it in among the five excellent titles above, as if it were somehow comparable.

it remains omitted from any modern-day English dictionary or thesaurus.

Huh!? Can anyone be so naive? It is in any real dictionary. As I thought every schoolboy has verified.

        • Okay, I still find it interesting that anyone would be offended by that. I'm really sorry to hear that looking at that image causes you so much grief and anger and sincerely hope that it doesn't affect you negatively any further, continues to ruin your day or causes you any pain or suffering. By saying this I'm not having a go at you, I'm really just trying to understand your reasoning because I just don't get it.

You know well that image was used because it was automatically retrieved from the page. Why would anyone argue that it was being 'sneaked' in? I agree with you that they're not comparable based on their content, but they're all just books on an online book shop after all so I don't see why you make it out as such a big deal.

Would you be equally offended if the image was something that was well and truly of filthy, immoral or sinister nature? Would you consider that as a source of brainwashing the minds of our children? Surely, if anything is to blame for brainwashing children, then such things would most certainly be it. How on earth (pun intended) could the concept of heaven even remotely be considered as evil? Perhaps you're getting confused with the follow-up book: Hell is for real. ;]

Perhaps you haven't allowed yourself to challenge your perception of the Heaven 'thing'. Blatantly saying that it was designed with an intent to brainwash doesn't necessarily equate toward deep subject matter insight. Can either of us prove or disprove such an abstract matter in a convincing manner? To this end, it would be in anyone's best interest to be mindful that openly challenging the beliefs of others and proclaiming it as false truths might be subject itself to being interpreted as, for lack of a better word and by nature, propaganda.

Side note: I haven't seen that word in any dictionary (what is a 'real' dictionary by the way?) and it didn't form part of my school curriculum. The dictionary argument is really moot - each to his own.

Just to clarify, I don't see this as a my opinion vs. your opinion thing or debate of any form but an opportunity to learn from others. This isn't really the place or best way to share our differences. And with that I digress as I wish to leave you with happy thoughts. Have a great week.
