NOKIA Lumia 520... the best value GPS phone?

hi

For maps on the go without data is the Nokia Lumia 520 at $149 from Telstra the best value GPS phone to get?

Also is it cheap to unlock from Telstra?

Also thinking maybe to get it from AMAZON and then unlock it here in Aus, cause it only $55USD:

  • I have a 520 and it's quite good, but Windows Phone OS isn't quite up to the level of Android/iOS IMO (although 8.1 should help that).

The phone itself is pretty good—it feels pretty solid etc. The battery lasts 2-3 days of light/medium use. The maps without data feature is great :)

Regarding unlocking, not sure as I bought mine unlocked. But if you are going to use it on Virgin/Optus you will need to import as that network uses different frequencies for 3G. The phone will still work but you'll fall back to 2G a lot of the time. The Amazon one may have the same or different bands, so check that before purchasing.

There are quite a few going for about $50-70 on eBay as well if you want second hand…

  • +1

US phones are very very very hard to unlock, even those who promise it on eBay often fail.

  • I've got one (as well as a 920 and 1320 :) and its a great phone.

Dont buy it from telsra! Get it from Harvey, slightly cheaper and its unlocked.

There are two models of the 520, one that supports telstra and vodafone (the model HN sells) and one that supports Optus (850 vs 900mhz). So do your research there if you're with optus.

Also AT&T phones are VERY hard to unlock, theyve clamped down hard on those online unlocking services. So be careful there.

You could always get a 2nd hand one off gumtree for $90
