Cheapest way to buy Retina MacBook Pro

Hi guys,
My Sony vaio died on me yesterday, and have semester exams in a week.
I am thinking to get rMBP 8gb/256gb and this would be my first Mac.

The best deal I got is Myer 100$ discount at the moment + my Myer team member discount 10%. I called to confirm if they do price match & EDU discount, it seems they do but either EDU or 100$ offer.

Can anyone enlighten me with their experience to get it cheaper.

Cheers!

    Why a Mac? Rip-off. Just get a $500 Lenovo E series.

  • I have used Windows for previous 3 laptops and desktop, I vote for change now :p

    • If you like the user experience of a Mac, but want a bigger range of programs; try Ubuntu.

Linux from days gone by is 'dead' the new Ubuntu Unity is, to me, easier than OSx and way more powerful if you want to start learning (and no, that doesnt mean code).

They added an app store, things auto mount, it comes with firefox and OpenOffice.

Its simple enough for my elderly parents, and powerful enough for my daily use.
Windows is purely for Gaming, but with Steam on Ubuntu now, thats even starting to die to me.

Its free to try; nothing to lose if you're bored and have a PC to install it on.

      • I will definitely give it a go, I have first rip off my VAIO and fix it, starting off to learn Hardware and then experiment on with Ubuntu.

MYER will do 10% off usually to price match the common sales at DSE.
So you could ask for 10% off + add your team member discount for the best deal.
I don't know if you can earn MYER One points if you're staff but that's another 2% back in gift cards.

  • Follow around an apple truck and wait for something to fall out and hope its the one you want.

  • I don't want the damaged one, I'll let u have it cypher67.

  • Excellent macbook, I am currently using that exact specification one. Really depends on how desperate you are for this laptop, if you wait a few more months there will be a spec bump and increased battery life on this model making it an even better laptop :D Just an idea!

  • Thanks SB, do u happen to know any coming sooner?

Are you familiar with the MacRumors Buyers Guide? http://buyersguide.macrumors.com

For the MBPr, it advises "Caution | Approaching End of Cycle", so it's a shame you need one ASAP.

The cheapest way to buy Macs, if your employer allows it, is via salary sacrifice: you not only get the item pre-tax (more effective the higher your tax bracket), but you also don't pay GST. If you can buy them at a discount (eg, corporate or education pricing, or by buying it with gift cards bought at a discount like you sometimes can with DSE) then even better.

Your ability to get 10% off PLUS staff discount (5%) is probably the next best thing.

You can also buy it from the US, some of the best deals are listed here — http://www.macrumors.com/2014/06/13/buyers-guide-discounts-j… — but because AU Mac pricing is now close to parity with the US after taking into account sales tax, it's not as attractive after shipping.

Bonus: maybe like me you'd be surprised to discover that one of the biggest advantages to Mac ownership is financial: they maintain a high resale value compared to similar-priced PCs.

And yes, after 7 years of using them alongside PCs at work and now exclusively at home, I can confidently say Macs are a pleasure to use. And even better things are coming with OS X Yosemite — if you have an iOS device, the Continuity suite of features is a real (not gimmicky) treat.

    • Thanks member0230, quite helpful. I am thinking to get one today.
      Cheers

  • The ONLY time i use touch on my windows 8 touchscreen laptop is to login with a pin BUT i use the 'touch' pad finger swipes all the time on my MacBook Air. Win8 is a mess, its neither touch friendly nor fully 64bit with heaps of old 32bit driver and apps; its a mess and microsoft should be very ashamed and thats before you find all the malware, spyware and security issues.

Get a mac for sure and the suggestions are all good here but consider a used one…

And why retina? You can buy a used 15" & 17" MacBooks with 1080P for 1K+

+1 on resale value and out of warranty support from apple too. Its better than anything HP or DELL have ever offered IMO

  • The Apple Store will price match any advertised price. They also do 0% finance through GE for 12 months which is also an option.

  • I'm conivenced to get MacBook.

Reason for getting retina display would be because of latest model, and it's quite slim and compact than previous MacBook pro after losing its CD drive.

Thanks for Ur input guys, I'm heading to Myer to do price match and discount.
    Cheers

  • Is it worth the wait for new MacBook pro in September 2014(hopefully), with updated trackpad and processor?

    • If you can wait, sure. Then you have the choice of the new model or the old one at refurb prices. Could you live with an Air? I peronally think they are better value than Retinas, but that depends on your needs.

      • I don't think, I would be happy with Air not because it not suitable on configuration, somehow I want MBP it might best serve for future needs.

  • Has anyone of you guys have leased a Laptop or any elctrical items from Harvey Norman, the reason being on my visit to store sales guy asked me to take it.

    It was something like this:

0% interest free (apparently ending june 30) for 50 months
    490$ upfront for the goods
remaining amount is divided into 10 equal payments
    Example : rMBP $1849 for 8gb/256/13"

    1849-490 = 1359
    1359/10 months = 135.9 $ every month for lease

but on the contrary, sales guys was suggesting that we can claim this during tax returns ( can anyone confirm this pls!)
By the end of 10 months, he said something about getting last two months wavered if we renew contract or buy at HN also if we want to purchase the same item we can pay 1 month of extra lease and be owned.

And also get $200 Giftcard if I would have bought it today at HN.

    Care to comment?!

P.S. i was in a hurry so couldn't get a lot of info

  • sounds like a pretty good deal, would like to know what others think?

    • that's what i thought, I am thinking to move this to financing or computing with new thread maybe that helps.
