It really stuck in my mind, he was a politician, he caught his own murderer in a photo he was taking of his family as he was murdered

Good bargain. Cheap airfares are gone. Not famous for being the safest place to visit.

I would recommend caution. Why risk your life or that of your family if you don’t need to.
I have heard stories of people being shot, kidnapped and raped. Many go unreported.
It is sometimes hard to know who to trust. Whether in uniform or not in uniform. Some disguise as law enforcement.

Large number of reported and unreported bombings.

An aussie dies in Bali every 9 days..
but still plenty of idiots go there..

I'm sure lots of people bagging or second guessing the Philippines do..

      • -1

Agreed. Some of that is from self behavior. However, Bali and the Philippines is different because some of the issues like kidnapping, shootings etc is not through your own fault.

9 aussies would die everyday, in manila.

    • some people are defined by watching too much World News incidents & Ross Kemp shows! Understandably if that is your primary source of info & drink too much coffee.. traveling to Brazil is a no no & the World Cup will be an empty place… Lucky for you though there is still hope travelling the world… Google Maps & YouTube.

Understandably you wouldn't travel to places like Syria, Iraq, etc…. but Philippines???? All of my ozzie m8s & family thats been there and regularly go there are all elated of their experiences every time… In saying that…You don't experience Philippines by staying in Manila. Nor would you risk going to places in the south where there are known extremist groups.

Off course do some research and learn from other people experiences.. tripadvisor etc.. have a plan…

If you are simply going there coz of this CHEAP flight.. and without an itinerary or a plan you will most definitely be overwhelmed!

  • really nice prices

  • keep us posted if more deals like this.

  • Airasia have Manila to Cebu for $21 each way inc taxes and pay with paypal. In September anyway maybe other destinations and dates i would recommend staying little time in Manila.

To those posting about how dangerous it is:
Have you been there? Do you have any experience at all?
If not, why are you posting such a load of rubbish?

Bad things happen everywhere, if you have common sense and are respectful of others, they happen generally less.

    • +1

I've lived there for one year now. Writing this from Manila. That's the thing, many Australians do not have common sense - especially when intoxicated. Remember you many Australians have been living in a bubble that is 'Australia' for their entire lives, just because you think you can handle Australia doesn't mean u can handle another place well - it's another ball game. I'm just saying, there's a high casualty rate of Australians in SEA and countries where you can literally go crazy. Ask Zyzz…

    • +1

Have you been there? If not, how do you know it's rubbish? It's not. The idea that it's just another SEAsian capital is wrong. It's worse than other countries, unfortunately. The provinces and other islands are fantastic, though, and the people are quite different.

My girlfriend lives in Cebu i bought her a ring and one night riding in a jeepnee some lowlife showed her a knife and made her give it up.On another occasion we were walking down main st in Cebu at 10.30 on a Saturday night and some kid about 10 ran in front of my gf grabbed her necklace put it in his mouth and ran up the middle of the st,i chased him for about 200 metres but im 53 and not as fit as i used to be.
And in Manila walking over an overpass someone unzipped my gfs backpack and stole a bracelet. So dont wear any jewelery thats expensive and lock your bags even tough sometimes they slash them open with a blade.

      • -1

Thats being reckless… You exercise caution and don't wear your bling bling! Dont be reckless with your back pack etc… Even when i was in Milan with my family.. my mothers bag was slashed and her decoy purse was snatched!.. in the train you will see pickpocketers in action… this is Milan I am talking about.. not Phils.. so exercise the same caution…

        • +1

Yeah well a lot of new travelers don't know so that's why i post to open their eyes before they go there.

    • Yeah, all the dangers are overblown. And Manila is not a one day city, it is lots of fun to live here. I am sitting in my Tune Hotel in Makati, which I grabbed for 430 pesos a night. But feel free to stay away from Manila. More girls for me. So there.

Seriously… if Manila & the dangerous Islands of Mindanao (where the extremist lurk) is what defines tourism in the Philippines.. then you have a good case not to go there! Living in Manila is also a different story! As somebody had already said… MANILA isn't Philippines. You lived there for one year now???? Oooh and you are still alive? Can't believe it!!!! With all what this "admin" guy is making out Philippines to be (btw it is obvious he/she hasn't stepped a foot to countries that don't have any murder, kidnapping, etc)…

In saying that…. many people are stressed out with the chaotic Manila… including I! Manila isn't a "tourist friendly" place in the sense that if you don't have friends, family, personal/group tour guides, etc that will take you around.. then you can get pretty overwhelmed! Manila isn't like Bangkok (where tourism is well developed and you can easily get around)…

As much as I can when I am in Phils… I visit the provinces & the many islands. There are just so many beautiful places to discover each time……. I absolutely understand how "terrible" experiences one will have if he/she is travelling alone and without any itinerary or plans! Philippines is best explored with a bunch of friends…and for the first timers who do want to explore Manila for a couple of days.. there are many reputable sightseeing tours that can be organized. http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attractions-g298573-Activities…
