I work for a freight forwarder and for your own benefit, I would try to take as much as possible with you on the flight. try to buy more luggage limit. China customs are bastards particularly when it comes to stuff sent by a courier type service. If I were you i'd definately take all the most valuable stuff with you on the plane and then possibly look to send the rest by a mail type service. It's slower but comes under far less scrutiny (therefore less chance of hassle) from customs. Aside from australia post, some other companies like pack and send offer a "global mail" service which can work out to be cheaper than australia post. Just beware you probably can't track them.
