NSW Electricity - Origin Energy Retention deal

I went with Red Energy from Origin Energy late last year. The timing was bad (just after a meter read) and the changeover had to wait until March. Coming up to one quarter since then I got a call from Origin Energy retention.
They are offering me 19% off usage for electricity (18% pay on time and 1% direct debit).

Rates from 23rd June: GST ex GST inc
0 to 4000 .249 .2739
4000 to 8000 .2638 .29018
8000+ .2848 .32318
Daily Supply Charge .71 .781

They are offering me 16% off usage for gas (15% pay on time and 1% direct debit).

Rates from 11th June: GST ex GST inc
0 to 15000 .03287 .036157
15000 to 33000 .01925 .021175
33000 to 102000 .01898 .020878
102000 to 1002000 .01883 .020713
1002000 to 5004000 .01786 .019646
Daily Supply Charge .4709 .51799

I took the $100 bill credit from Red Energy (still to be received on the first bill that will come up after this meter upcoming read) and received a $50 gift card for the sign up referral. I have a $200 termination fee.
Origin Energy verbally told me they would pay the termination fee too!

  • Do you have a reference for the offer, as I know the standard offering is 12%?

Also, was that offer one that is available for solar panel customers (and include a FIT), or do you not have any panels?

I am with OE (no contract and on TOU rates) and having panels installed today, so want to see if I can negotiate with OE on contracted rates.

    Pax

    • I don't have panels.

      The energy offers are called:
DailySaver Plus Energy Agreement for the supply of Electricity
DailySaver Plus Energy Agreement for the supply of Gas

    • Their standard offering on the web site is called eSaver and in NSW it comes with 14% (electricity), 7% (gas) plus additional 1% for direct debit.

On their web site again, the DailySaver "Plus" is 5% for both fuels and 1% for direct debit. The "Plus" thus definitely is a big plus for the company as they scoop big profits out of customers who don't bother (or threaten) to switch or take it up with the retention team.

Just checked I'm with EnergyAustralia FlexiSaver Solar Plan (no exit fee) offers 12% on electricity & 4% gas.

Also EnergyAustralia currently offering 15% & 10% discounts on electricity and gas. Time to give them a call I guess.

  • Ahh the deregulation thing coming in

Are these new prices placed on current "contracts" "offers"

  • How do these rates and discounts compare to Red's?

    • Red currently offers 10% off the whole bill, with rates in my area as per this fact sheet
      http://www.redenergy.com.au/docs/nsw_price_fact_sheets/Red-E…
When I moved to them I think I got 12% off the whole bill. But OE's 19% off usage beats this.

The RedEnergy tiers are based on first 10.96 kWh per day, next 10.96 kWh per day and remainder.
I'm not quite sure how they would be able to determine how much electricity is used per day when the meter is only read quarterly.

      • The first (10.96 kWh x number of days) in the billing cycle will be charged at the stipulated rate and so on. The "0 to 4000" used by Origin is just the annualised amount (10.96 x 365 days).

        • Ah. Thanks for explaining that. So the Rates are the same.

  • AGL called me today to confirm the Gas changeover. They couldn't match either rate. Their maximum discount on Gas was 10% and Electricity was 16%.

  • You're in NSW, correct? May I ask who was the associate that contacted you at Origin? (I was also contacted). Thanks !

    • Why are you asking for that, and why here?

      • I'm asking because I was quoted a similar, but inferior, deal to leave Red and go with Origin. I wanted to know if we lived in the same state, and thus would have been offered comparable deals.

        • His member profile says he's in Sydney.

Try negotiating with Origin and share your experience in this thread please.

        • Right. Didn't know that was there…and also didn't see what the big deal was.

        • That's completely understandable to me. Everyone has rights to privacy and their decisions for what information to share.

BTW, just noted that the schedule of rates quoted in OP is Ausgrid area (previously EnergyAustralia area), which says he's near CBD or inner city suburbs.

        • Of course everyone has a right to their privacy. But let's be honest, I only asked what state he was in, it was a warranted question with regards to energy deal conversations, and he's obviously happy with people seeing he's from Sydney if it says so in his profile.

We chatted on PM, so let's let it go and keep the discussion to getting the best deal on our energy.

        • +1

I wasn't concerned my privacy (although perhaps I should be). My location is in my profile.
I was concerned about providing the associate's name here in the open and why you wanted it.
          Resolved now via PM.

        • I will pm u for the rep'name. I am new in oz bargain so be patience. I am with OE and getting 12% usage discount. My contact will be finish on 22 July. Hopefully I can negotiate a better discount with OE.

  • Red Energy just called me to confirm I wanted to move on. They did not improve their offer.

  • My contact with OE will be finished on 22 July. I am getting 12% usuage discount. Called OE and they can only offered me 15% ususage discount (14% + 1% signed for Direct Debit)- same as they online esaver offer. No exist fee. That is the best offer they can gave me.
