Best modem for new Telstra connection

Looking for feedback for best modem(/router) combo for new Telstra connection.
Like ASUS products but reading some forum discussions seems there are different opinions about Trendchips vs Broadcom chip.

Some options listed on one discussion include:
- Asus DSL-N55U
- TP-LINK TD-W8970 (or TP-Link TD-W8980?)
- Netgear DGND3700

  • I'm just under 2klm from exchange and neighbours getting upto 8Mbps (they have an old Telstra T-box thing).
  • Have been using 3Gusb via ASUS RTn-16 (router only).
  • I have an old TP-Link TD8840 modem - any thoughts whether that could work with Telstra for initial setup (not listed on compatible devices)
  • only 2 devices (mobiles) are wireless, everything else is hardwired

Any thoughts/tips appreciated

  • Buy Apple Airport Extreme……… Best

  • I've been using a TP-LINK TD-W8970 for a while now. Stable and fast. 4 x 10/100/1000 ports too if you need them.
I'm with internode using their offnet adsl2+ (telstra) and it flys. Generally syncs around 14-15Mb
I'm about 2.6km (cable length) from the exchange

I think broadcom is better after 2.5km cable length from the exchange but my TP-Link is Trend and I have no problem.

Previously I had a D-Link thing that I had to reboot everyday. POS D-link.. avoid them.

Before that I had a Netgear that was a solid little thing but ADSL 1 only.

I can't comment on the Asus N55U, though we do use the Asus N66U for our corporate network, they take 3rd party firmware really well.

  • thanks for comments/feedback… still waiting for connection at exchange….
