Cash advance fee when buying gift cards?

I managed to get some gift cards as part of the ebay 15% off sale. I paid with paypal which charged the amount to my credit card.

This morning I checked my credit card statement and found I have been charged a cash advance fee for the paypal purchase.

Has anyone seem something similar where they have been charged a cash advance for purchasing giftcards?

    • Yup, same thing. Would've been nice to have a warning; I would have happily paid through a debit card or bank transfer.

Im pretty sure the fault is at PayPal.

They are so big that if you ask the CSR they will know nothing, because their script doesnt have this info.

Probably somewhere they changed the category codes for the sale. Hence your bank will see it as charge it as a cash advance.

Again why is it PayPal's fault? Yet they deny it?
Of course they will deny it. It's their PR/marketing/face on the line if this gets out.

Also if you think it's not their fault, then look at the eBay t&c's they said the offer starts at 10.01, yet it started at 1am, and there was 60k coupons.

Big companies lie and their face doesnt know what the arse is talking about.

  • no cash advance on my card.
paid with westpac issued amex linked to paypal

  • I am with Westpac Altitude Black, and being charged as well!! Daily interest somemore!

    • Got same charge on Westpac 55 days visa card. Spoke to Customer support. they waived off the Cash advance but not the interest on that .

  • Is this just with credit/debit cards?

If I paid with Paypal(money taken out from my bank account), would I still be at risk of getthing charged an 'advance fee'?

No risk at all, cash advance is only applicable to credit cards.

        thank you :)

  • I have no idea how NAB / gifte CardLimbo / Paypal set up their payment system, but I've used my same card (NAB Platinum CC) for countless eBay / Paypal transactions and have never been classified as Cash Advance payment before.

Very bad practice by one of these parties. NAB has assured me that it is the merchant that pulled a Cash Advance, and I believe them. I have used this card with Paypal a lot of times too, so that rules Paypal out. The only party left - gifte / CardLimbo.

Needless to say, I will not be dealing with gifte again.

  • I requested for a waive and got rejected for the first time. Rang back again in 30 minutes and pretty much begged to have it waived. After the guy spoke to his supervisor, he agreed to have it waived.

Mine is not as smooth as others, but I am glad it's done..

  • Pay with Citibank signature Credit Card, got charged as cash advance, charged $14 interest rate on July statement.

Will call the bank on tomorrow

  • Don't appear to have any cash advance charges showing online against my Citibank Platinum (though perhaps something could pop up on the impending statement).

I tried paying the previous Citibank statement at Australia Post with Gifte issued cards and was told they could only accept a single card at a time, so I paid on three consecutive days. I then found there was a $2.50 charge imposed per transaction, so whinged to Citibank who said it was Auspost and not Citibank responsible. Nevertheless Citibank kindly reversed the charges as a goodwill gesture.

The remaining cards I guess will be used for utility bills or the likes where I can't get a 5% pay wave discount on the full amount.

  • I just got my coles credit card statement and i found an issue…

On 22-06 I had the Paypal transaction that incurred a cash advance
On 25-06 I had the cash advance fee reversed and also paid the full Paypal transaction amount to ensure there are no cash advance interest charges

today I received my statement and it has an interest charge for the full Paypal transaction balance * 19.99%/365 * number of days between transaction and statement issued.

Now the issue is - they didn't allocate my payment against the highest interest charge bucket first (e.g. the payment I made on 25/06 should have stopped any cash advance interest). This is not in line with their terms & conditions.

Has anyone else had the same issue?

    • If the payment you made on 25/6 wasn't allocated against the cash advance transaction first then you should have been charged interest from 22/6 through to the end of the statement period. It sounds like you were only charged interest for 3 days, so I think they have allocated your payment against the right amount (i.e. the cash advance transaction) but unfortunately 3 days too late.

      • I was charged interest from 22/6 through to the end of the statement period, which I believe is against the consumer credit code (card was issued after the credit card reforms came into existence).

Credit card providers will be required to direct repayments to the most expensive part of your credit card debt first - making it easier to reduce your debt faster.

        • Oh right, yes that is wrong of them. Have you contacted them? Surely they will reverse the interest for you on the spot

          @apate:

Yeah, they reversed it, but i'm wondering if others have the same issue. It could be a systematic issue at GE Money or it could be just me.

  • Got my Citibank signature card statement today and noticed that they charged me a cash advance fee at statement print date (almost a month after gifte transaction). Interest was waived as a once off goodwill gesture, but thing is I'm going to be charged again next statement for days I don't pay the "cash advance". The lady I spoke to kindly told me that they will waive the next interest charge as well, but what a hassle!

I left negative feedback to gifte's ebay account a couple of weeks ago and it has completely disappeared from their page or my "feedback left for others" page. I can't leave feedback again because ebay says I have already left feedback. My feedback was simply stating that you may receive a cash advance fee if you buy gift cards from gifte. If they have managed to get this removed from eBay that throws off my confidence completely in eBay's feedback system.

    • The exact same thing happened to me.

      Negative Feedback is hidden.

    • Just had this back from ebay:

      Hello Jay,

Thanks for contacting eBay about the feedback you left for giftegifts.

Looking into it, I can see that it was indeed removed. Please know that a seller can appeal for the feedback to be removed. If the feedback can fall under our feedback removal policy, we can therefore remove it. Since the circumstances and feedback fall under our policy, we have removed it.

      Thanks for understanding, Jay.

      Sincerely,
      Karla L.
