    +1 to this.

not that i would understand why anyone wants to go to Egypt anyway (i know i might get blasted for this). But its politcailly unstable, females can not safely walk the streets alone, females can not safely walk the streets with male friends at night unless you travel in a large group. People are charged for no reason.

    Free Peter Greste!

    • Sounds like you're describing Western Sydney there mate

    • The Peter Greste situation, plus other bad publicity for Egypt over the last year or so has definitely put me off travelling there. For now, I'd prefer to spend my tourist $$ in another country.

Overreacting a bit arent you cloudy?
My wife traveled to Egypt last year with a GF and they had no problems walking the streets of Cairo.
She was felt up on a train in Brisbane 2 years ago, does that mean Brisbane should be off limits?

While I agree its a pretty poor thing for Peter, punishing people who had nothing to do with the decision made is not the answer in my opinion.

    • There are travel bans to many countries in the past for many reasons. It'snot about opunishing the people, it's about the fact if you are jailed for doing something normal in our society there is nothing anyone can do to save you.

So you say in Australia you can be axed murdered and no one can help you. My rebuttal is simply this, you can use examples of individual bad behaviour to counter my arguments, but what I describe is systematically accepted issues in that country.

If it wasn't a systematic issue, why has Tony Abbott's plea to the prime minister of Egypt yield nothing but a go away response.

      • A few points

        1) I never mentioned being axe murdered
        2) If I was axe MURDERED I would be dead so nobody would or could help me.

Regardless of what you say here the comment you made previously was over simplified and over exaggerated and made by someone who probably drew that conclusion from something he read in a tabloid or heard 3rd hand.

        • you are correct, all my conclusions are from research from forign journalist, nothing i heard is from Peter Greste's mouth, or someone who has been locked up like Peter. Do you wonder why? It is because he is LOCKED UP, he isn't entitled to speak to anyone.

So you're first hand experiences are from people who hasn't been locked up.
          Thats fine.
But you do have to realise by defination of being able to speak to someone who didn't get locked up is because, low and behold, he/she wasn't locked up!

BTW: The usage of axe murderer was not because you used those words, it was as an example of crime.

Also you never addressed my main point, Eypgt has systematic issues.

    Don't travel to Egypt.

If you travel to Egypt you financially support the criminal regime
that has illegally imprisoned these political prisoners.

Therefore anyone who travels there is criminally complicit
    in this wrongful imprisonment.

Don't travel there until they are free.

  • Eh, he worked for Al Jazeera, he knew what he was getting himself into. Anyone familiar with the news company or Qatar in general shouldn't be surprised by this, so I'll just assume that everybody here isn't familiar with the news company or Qatar.

tl;dr his situation is the equivalent of working for FOX News and trying to cover a US-backed 'revolution' in Iran— It wasn't going to end well, and he knew it.

On another note however, pressure should be placed on the Australian government, not travel agencies. But then again, he didn't smuggle weed in his boogie board bag, so the Australian gov isn't interested.

As far as I know the Australian government is doing what they can for Peter Greste. Why would they be less likely to help him than someone who smuggles weed in a boogie board bag. Schapelle Corby's charges had some fairly compelling evidence to back them up, What Eqypt has Peter charged Peter with is obviously bullshit.

  • I dont think its the best solution to this problem. A lot of people would like to visit Egypt from different countries. So it will has small economic effects. Also anyone from Arab background or know about Arabs.. they dont usually care.

  • for me the world is big, why go to problem countries, have no desire to go to Egypt for quite some time, just added to the list with Russia, USA and some VERY corrupt Asian countries
