Leaving negative feedback after refund on eBay

Hi all,

I bought a Windows 7 COA and DVD from what was suppose to be a reputable seller on ebay, turns out the COA was dodgy as (weaving in the "genuine microsoft" section was not right and actually peeled off, the printing scratched off easily and there were no anti-tampering perforations on the sticker).

Anyway, I contacted the seller and had it refunded. I still want to contact Microsoft and have this investigated, but I left feedback on their ebay profile indicating the COA was fake and not genuine. They immediately contacted me to pull down the feedback because it was refunded.

Thoughts anyone? Was I right to leave the feedback? Should I pursue this with Microsoft?

They can't do anything about the negative feedback. They deserved it if they wilfully sold you pirated software. Since the COA is basically a badly printed copy that means the license they sold you was made using a key generator software.

Also claims like "I didn't know it was pirated" doesn't hold much water as the entire batch they are selling may be all pirated copies and they're basically betting on that the vast majority of people who bought don't know that it's pirated. The ones who do realize it's pirated get their money back and get pushed to take down the negative feedback.

REMEMBER: The crooks are willing to fully refund you because they have an UNLIMITED SUPPLY of these keys and it doesn't cost anything for them to make a replacement key for you either. They will just email you another bogus code.

A person who is selling a legit key on the other hand, will probably not give you a refund at all because the key is pretty much one-use only.

Don't be one of these idiots, leave the negative feedback there as a permanent record that they sold you bogus stuff.

Microsoft will very vigorously prosecute these guys, and I believe offer you a reward if you dob them in:

You did the right thing OP. When I received counterfeit material on ebay I also left negative feedback even though the seller gave me a quick refund.

I left them this comment in red:

"Counterfeit item received from seller. Australian Federal Police contacted."

  • I once purchased a legit version of office on wBay only to have the product ID key bounce one the microsoft servers, I called microsoft to complain, they informed me it was a known pirated key - microsoft offered to swap it for a genuine version if I sent it to them with the tax invoice (which the seller had provided). All turned a bit scary when I told the seller this - be careful people selling pirated goods on ebay are often part of crime gangs committing large scale fraud. Not that you shouldn't stand up to them, but just consider who you might be dealing with and what personal information of yours they have.

I once bought a pirated Doctor Who box set (it wasn't at a so cheap it can't be real price either). I contacted the seller who immediately refunded me and told me to keep it.

I then negged him. He asked me to remove it and I refused. I then when through his feedback and contacted as many people as I could to let them know they had bought counterfeit goods.

Reported it to the BSA with as much detail as possible. Couldn't care much about the reward, I'm more concerned about the others that get duped.

Let us know if the BSA ever follows up with you. Could be a lucrative side income for OzBargainers! ;-)

You definitely did the right thing by leaving negative feedback. You are making other people aware that this seller is selling a fake item. Stand your ground!

  • Feedback is meant to be seen by other potentional buyers, why would you take it down ?

If this happened to me i would do the same thing, if only to help any other potential unsuspecting purchasers.
