iPhone 5 Dropped!

My 1.5 year old iPhone 5 dropped from upstairs onto marble tiles in the kitchen. It had a plastic case and dropped directly on its back. I watched the screen slowly fade away into darkness and when I ran down to try and turn it on it WON'T TURN ON!

Furthermore, the phone is not displaying anything when I connect it to my desktop. It's heating up strangely…I tried to hold the power and home button for 1 minute but nothing…

What should I do now?

    Go android.

    • Yes, clearly he should drop several hundred dollars on a brand new phone rather than getting it replaced for free. Truly a bargain.

      • How would he get a replacement for free? It's clearly NOT a warrantee issue.

LOL droid users as helpful as ever.

  • Sell for parts on eBay/Gumtree and buy a new phone would probably be the best option.

NO! apple will most likely replace it free of charge

    Go to http://www.iexperts.com.au/

They have a repair centre in Melb.

If it doesn't turn on, I'm guessing either the battery was jostled and its no longer connected to the logic board, or perhaps the logic board itself has broken.

NO, always try apple first as they'll most likely replace it free

  • I decided to put my SIM card into another iPhone 5 for temporary use. Is there anyway I can access my contacts from this SIM?

    • To import contacts from a SIM card to your iPhone, follow these steps:

      Insert the SIM card.
Go to Settings, choose "Mail, Contacts, Calendar"
      Select "Import SIM contacts".

Your contacts are on the cloud, and probably not even on the SIM?

      • I tried this and nothing happened. I don't think I activated iCloud on my old phone.

        • Contacts are almost never saved on SIMs these days.

iCloud isn't your only contact backup — if you set up Gmail (or another email provider) you could have synced your contacts there — try logging in to gmail on a desktop and looking at its contacts section (Click the Gmail text dropdown in the top left).

        • Did you ever backup your phone onto your itunes?
If you did then you should be able to restore everything.
If you didnt back up onto iCloud or itunes, then youre screwed

        • the default is that it is turned on.

ALL iPhones are covered by 2 year australian warranty and since it doesn't have physical damage (cracks) I'd take it to an apple store genius appointment and claim it stopped working (which it has). They'll most likely replace with refurb new unit. Unless you have an itunes backup of your phone, it's likely you've lost your contacts and photos.
Make sure you select iCloud backup if you get a new one

    • This.

Since they're less than 2 years old, all iPhone 5s are covered under Australian Consumer Law. If it doesn't show signs of misuse, the Apple store should swap it out for free, no questions asked.

        does samsung do the same

        • I don't know Samsung's policy on the matter. Technically after the 1 year warranty is up, they don't have to, but they may choose to like Apple does.

But the retailer is required to provide free repairs or replacements under Australian Consumer Law for ~2 years. (Provided you didn't shatter it, immerse it in water, stick it in the microwave etc.) So even if Samsung won't do it, whoever you bought it from (be it the telco, a retailer like JB HiFi, or an Australian online seller) has to.

2 years isn't law, just a "reasonable" amount of time — you'd expect an $800 coffee machine to last a lot longer than a $20 one from Kmart — but the ACCC have indicated that with most phones coming with 2 year contracts, 2 years is certainly considered reasonable for a smartphone, regardless of whether you bought it on contract or not.

You are correct, however no warranty would cover dropping the phone on the ground, as OP did. By all means try Apple and if they fix it for you, excellent, but if they find evidence of physical damage, you might be denied and unfortunately you don't have any right to get it fixed for free in this situation.

Apple are pretty good though, so give them a shot. (Don't say you dropped it. Or do, but they won't fix it most likely if you do that :P)

Even if it's not covered by warranty

You should be able to get it replaced for $250 at apple
