MSY — good prices generally, but always out of stock.
UMART — slightly more expensive than MSY but competitive prices

    • Not really, MSY are actually pretty good with stock if you're buying your standard items, even if they're out of stock, there's always other options, e.g. other brands, so it's not too bad.

MSY probably have the best prices and selection for your commodity PC gear.

      • It depends which branch you're talking about. The NSW Ultimo branch is almost perpetually out of stock of the popular branded motherboards and i5 processors, probably because their buffer stock isn't very big so they keep having to order more in.

        • I'm talking about VIC Clayton branch, which is the biggest in the state, so probably different point of views there. I've ran into stock issues several times, once was with an SSD, so I just got another brand and another time with RAM, which I got another brand as well.

  • CPL is where I've bought most of my parts from in Melbourne. I've never run into any problems with them, except once they were going to give a more expensive 7970 until I told them.

I've also never run into stock issues in MSY, I've been to multiple stores for others. It's best reserve these parts before going in though.

  • Do you plan on building it yourself or getting them to do it?

    • Getting them to build it, as this is for my nephew.

  • Thank you for all of your replies, guys.
I have been waiting for a big discount from cpl or msy, but none happened yet.
It would be great if they discount on a complete computer, as im getting this one for my nephew.

I doubt you will really get a discount from them as they are more like wholesalers with a store front.

  • I've been hoarding stuff over the past week and a half. My build is primarily for home office use, HTPC and FSX on my 50" Plasma TV. I Started with buying the 2nd last MSI GTX650Ti at MSY Clayton for $109. They went out of stock after I bought it, but now it says there's Low Stock in Clayton, so they might still have one.

I want to build a hackintosh compatible system, so I was on the lookout for i5-4570 (2013) paired with Gigabyte H87-D3H ($105-MSY), but couldnt find any of the i5-4570 in Stock in VIC for cheap ($205 MSY price). So when I saw that i5-4670k (2013) was low stock at Cheltenham (15 min drive from me) I snapped it up last friday at $264. They're basically out of stock at MSY now, but PCCG has it for $269. To go along with it I got the Gigabyte Z87-HD3 for $129. But this meant I had to upsize CPU cooling from CM Hyper TX3 EVO to Hyper 212 EVO($37 MSY Malvern - 5 min drive, currently low stock). Also bought two 120mm CM case fans for total $8 from there.

From the ShoppingExpress Epic Hour I got one Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB Black DDR3-1600 stick for $79, hasn't arrived yet. And for case, I just bought a Cougar Archon 55M5 for $79 from PCCG which I'll probably pick up tomorrow. The Archon is the cheapest case+PSU (not the best) for fitting in my EVO 212.

tl;dr: Spent $706 so far on my hackintosh+overclockable i5-4670k build, without HDDs. If I had found a cheap 4570 at MSY prices, I couldve saved a $100 total (not overclockable). But I couldn't risk buying a 2013 H87 and pairing with 2014 i5-4590 given that I would probably need to update the H87 bios with a 2013 cpu first. If I'd had MSY build me a 4590+H87, I'd have saved $16 - but, I'm rather spending that on getting overclock privileges.

  • All I can tell you is that when I was looking at PCs a while back, the 'packages' they offered were not discounted and offered a comparable price to buying parts+assembly separately. You'll probably want to check it yourself. Let me know if anything has changed. :)

I got MSY to build it since it was for a family friend who wanted the back to base warranty. Cable management was ok, but I've heard it varies depending on who does it. It started having output problems about half a year in so they sent the PC in to be checked, and MSY handled RMA of the GPU, no fuss.

That said, here's a build to have a look at, if you were looking at build suggestions. I whipped it up fast just to get a price for a friend. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/3NzvdC You probably want to add a 3.5-inch HDD, and that +assembly will bring it to maybe $850-$900. You can shaved some off the SSD, though. I have a 120gig (and I keep running out of space, lol). And, of course, pick different parts.
