According to what people have experienced, this program does more harm than good.

Please stick with the following tried and true programs

    Malware removers:
MalwareBytes (get pro if you really want it, but it's not necessary — the free on demand edition is good enough)
    ADW Cleaner
    HiJackThis

    Drive cleaning tools:
CCleaner (do not use the registry cleaning module unless you're experienced with tweaking registries)
    Revo Uninstaller

Defraggers (ONLY for a HDD, not for an SSD)
    Defraggler

    Program Updater:
https://ninite.com/ helps you do unattended silent installs of software and also updates them, if they are not current. Ninite also says NO automatically to all junk software and bloatware. Everything on Ninite is tried and tested.

    • Thanks for advice.
I already have malware bytes; Ccleaner; revo uninstaller and I do use ninite.

So if I never use ASC again what program do I use to replace it?

The one-click cure-all solutions you see all over CNET in general are bogus, a lot of their functions can easily be found in the software I mentioned above. MalwareBytes is free, so is Ccleaner, and so is Revo uninstaller.

They don't play psychological tricks on the user with made-up reports of 'we found 10000 errors in your system! Fix it NOW!!".

Worse of all, these programs will usually run in the background and nag the user to either upgrade their license or buy affiliated products, or silently install them for you.

Do not support these unethical companies by downloading or using their software.

Also, stop downloading via CNET, their software catalogue is full of spam and shit software.

  • I agree with scrimshaw. In the publisher's (IObit) favour however, I highly rate their Win 8 start menu. Best one I've used hands down.

  • Crapware

Stick to glary utilities … Available on ninite site.

  • Its a dodgy software, pls don't download it . These come along with other bundled softwares- toolbars and other bad stuff. Stick on to the free microsoft security essentials free from microsoft.

  • Guys, I am having an extremely serious family matter regarding this effing software.

My dad and my elderly Grandpa live in the same house up the road from mine, when my father returns from his work overseas. Last year they both bought new Dell Computers, I helped my Grandpa who is particularly stingy with money purchase a pre-built desktop rig (yes I should have built one). I made a note of how quick the thing took to load up.

Anyway, my father also bought a new dell laptop and I made note of how speedy that was.

Whilst he was overseas, grandpa began complaining to me about how his computer was slowing down and taking longer to load up and so on. I went over the things on there, the only thing I had installed on there was Steam and one game through that. However I noticed "advanced system care" was on there and sent an email to dad about the things installed on there.

Recently when dad returned I noticed his comptuer had slowdown to boot. And that he had it on there too. He tried to install it on my mum's laptop to "fix" a problem with the power cable and I googled the software and realized how terrible was. He just went nuts and tried throwing it off the balcony. I've tried explaining it to him through forums and the Malewarebytes forum comments (since he also uses that reliable program), but the guy is a complete lunatic and refuses to listen to logic and reason since he would have been "paying money to scam artists for years".

A month later, grandpa's Windows 7 is completely effed and the OS is now having trouble booting up at all. I've tried explaining this to my father but he arranged for a Dell specialist to come look at it for "hardware" failure this week (who has yet to arrive).

Give me your wise council please guys!!! (Yeah I know I need new parents)

    • It is, particularly degrading to me for my biological father to consider his arrogant pride and scam snake oil software to mean more to him than his own son.

Well, your father is an example of someone who is easily sold to because he's a sucker for marketing that sells fear. Fear is persuasive. You could get hacked — download our anti-malware scanner to stop hacks. Also, why not install this toolbar that lets you browse safely. Oh! And this registry defrag tool too. We know registries can get so … fragmented, right?

Marketers use fear and uncertainty to motivate consumers to buy or act quickly.

This is what I do for non tech savvy family members, set them up an account with no admin privileges and let them loose!

I keep that admin account locked and don't tell them the password. Remote in with team viewer for the usual silly questions. Simple.

    • Thanks guys for…reminding me I'm not crazy.

  • If you want speed these days then install a SSD … cost around $80 and reinstall windows.
My desktop which is over 7 years old now boots up in about 7 seconds.

  • I am in the market for a new desktop or all in one computer say up to $1100. We are in our 70's so use it only for emails surfing the net and simple games. Please any recommendations

    • You'll need some good tablet or something like chromebook…

  • btw guys, don't download ANYTHING from Cnet or Download.com, as since CBS bought them out all downlaods come with unwanted "extras"
