Beware Maui ripoff

Read your deal with Maui VERY carefully.

I rolled up to collect a motorhome. Presented my card for imprint [which I have done in every place I've visited] and was told I had to have $7500 IN THE ACCOUNT. I explained that I had this amount easily covered in another account. They would not accept that account. CONSEQUENCES - I had no choice but to cancel. They have now said I cancelled, therefore my fault. I am now out of pocket $1200, I had to get extra hotel rooms at high cost and plane fares Darwin-Melbourne, MANY more dollars.

A representative of Maui told me TOO BAD! Go away. He will not give me a name for further up the chain of command to plead my case but says he has no power to help me.

A POX ON YOUR HOUSE MAUI!

If the Customer does not take Liability Reduction Option, the Vehicle Security Deposit is AU$7,500 payable by the Customer’s credit card only. The amount will be debited to the Customer’s account immediately.

I don't really know what you're talking about but couldn't you just have moved the money in "another account" to "THE ACCOUNT"?

  • Why wouldn't they accept the other account?

  • Reply to all.
The Liability Reduction Option is to give them a few hundred dollars income for nothing. The $7500 "Security Deposit" is invariably, round the world, an IMPRINT - not with Maui! - it needs cash in that account. I had a Travel insurance Policy to cover this amount but it had no effect on the counter girl.
It was a SATURDAY and the transfer of funds would have to be Monday plus changeover delay - Most of holiday gone.
The other account was a debit account - not acceptable.

      and yet….

      Wise words…

    • This is common practice for many car rentals / hotels. They take "Authorization hold" on the credit card until you return the vehicle / check out. An imprint is useless if there is no money in the account and you never show up again with their car. And your travel insurance policy means nothing for them because the policy only covers you, not the car rental company. Anyone can walk in holding a piece of paper claiming they have insurance policy anyway.

not sure about this, but now you…
