Is it really a bargain?I mean what was the price earlier?

  • +3

Can buy an Android or Windows in-car computer for that price!

  • Bargain. I see that the rrp is around $1200. First google link I find with a price is over $1000 on eBay and $800 in the USA.

Not a bargain. RRP is about 10 years old. Can buy a 7inch 2-Din Android player/ detachable face tablet, with DVD in head unit, GPS, etc for around $420 delivered.

The AVH-X8550 was first released in Feb 2013 - so less than 18 months ago.

This is a very good price for this unit - especially for Australian stock/warranty and local pickup locations - which makes it a bargain for anyone looking for this unit - regardless if there are vastly different products available cheaper.

Do you have a link to the ~$420 device?

A few other Aus retailers who have this (generally plus shipping) indicates this is a bargain:

        $699 @ www.ryda.com.au
        $780 @ www.topaudio.com.au
        $899 @ www.frankiesautoelectrics.com.au
        $899 @ www.soundmaster.com.au

I have the Pioneer AppRadio3 (which unfortunately was never released in Australia - I got mine from USA via eBay for around $500) but I would have JUMPED on this if it had been available at this price 6 months ago.

The AppRadio features are great. Combine it with a Netgear PTV3000 for wireless streaming of video/audio to your head unit, with full touchscreen control of your phone from the head unit (eg you can have your phone in the glove box). Or use HDMI/MHL if you prefer wired.

I use AppRadio Unchained which is an xda-dev mod of the official Pioneer app.

      • The android based cheapies are horrible to use and have poor screens. Their software is just poor and not in the same league as brand names like pioneer, Sony , alpine etc.

  • Pioneer is closing down in Australia,so we should see some more bargains coming soon.

just get an ipad or ipad mini..

more better apps, games, movies etc..

And you mod it put in your dash, or take it out anytime..

    ==========
Not really safe to be driving and watching movies anyways

  • On Pioneer's website - http://appradiomode.com/

There seems to be mention of new functionality and GUI updates in 2014.

Anyone know if this unit can be updated to use the new software/firmware?

    • There does not appear to be any recent firmware updates. One may be coming soon, or the new features may only be available on new model hardware..

  • I guess this model just missed out on being CarPlay compatible:
    http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/landing/products/carplay.html

    • By about a year… Apple first announced CarPlay around March this year, whereas this device was released early 2013.

That said, this unit has Apple iPhone support for the usual (Phone calls, bluetooth streaming) plus Pandora app including displaying album art and thumbs up/down, plus full screen mirroring with touch control so any app on your phone can be displayed and controlled on the head unit. I had a sound activated Geiss graphic display going for a while. Can also use Torque can bluetooth your phone to your car engine diagnostic port under the dash.

For ~$30 a little handbrake override relay can be used so more features are available all the time.
