  • Thanks been waiting for a deal on one of these.

  • -4

being locked to an expensive carrier is a dealbreaker though……

  • +4

Grab a HTC 8S that is unlocked for $75 instead then. Not brand new but I have purchased phones from these guys before and they all still work as good as new.

    • Is 4gb enough for a win8 phone?

      • +3

        It has a microSD slot.

I purchased one for use by the kids as an entertainment device. Windows Phone store has some great games for the kids and with the current $0 per month mobile plans you can use these to keep in touch with the kids too.

        • +1

Who is offering $0 per month mobile plans? (This sounds perfect for me…looking to move to a dual sim phone, with the second sim mainly there to keep my old number)

https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans technically their pay as you go isn't $0, but it is 365 credit expiry with small recharge.

        • -3

Good until they rack up a $999 PAYG bill?!

        • Um yeah, whoever negged obviously didn't read this lol - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150879

But I also guess this is why there are primary kids walking around with iPhones? lol

        • +1

          @Ultraman:
Yes but with a Nokia 520 (and any Nokia Lumia phone) you can set a phone up for a child and:
          1) Decide whether they can install any apps, just free apps, or paid apps
          2) If they want to install a paid app you can authorise this remotely
          3) You can monitor what apps are installed and what software is purchased
          4) You can set the maximum rating (G, PG, M, MA) etc for software that is installed.

The one thing you can't do (so far as I can tell) is actively limit the amount of phone calls / texts / data you use. (Although data is much more easily managed under the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 Update)

    • +8

Wow, a powerful processor they list for it :)

      Hardware
      Processor Speed 1 MHz

      • +2

Look beyond the narrow MHz figure. Bottom line is performance efficiency.

  • +3

    good for portable offline maps

but apparently you cant get here+ app on this for global turn by turn navigation?

Instead you get turn by turn navigation for a country when you setup the phone again with a country specific sim card, so you have to reset phone for each country you visit?

    • That is correct, the 620 was the best bargain phone IMHO, although I did get the 520 for mum.

FYI getting it unlocked through Telstra requires the sim being used for 6 months and then a fee of about $27.50 applies (might have gone up since last time I enquired).

      • +1

I checked last week for someone. Price was $27, but they waived it. First charged account, then gave $27 credit. Depends on who deals with your request.

      • If I've ever needed a phone unlocked I just ring my carrier tell them I'm going overseas & say I want to be able to use a cheap sim while I'm over there (I've done this 3 times Telstra & Optus) I've always had if unlocked for free… Is it just luck??

    • +1

My Lumia 520 running WP8.1 preview has HEAR Drive+ and HEAR Maps installed.

      • +2

I haven't tried the maps with WP8.1 preview on my 720, but was very impressed with many of the new features in WP8.1, particularly WiFi Sense. I think Microsoft are moving Windows Phone in all the right directions.

      • +2

        What? Can't "HERE" you. :)

    • You get Here+ for free with Windows Phone 8.1 (join the developer preview). Or you could pay $20 on the store to upgrade.

  • +3

    Can bagman unlock these?
And can they be used as is with aldi mobile? (Uses telstra 3g)

  • +3

My wife and I both have this phone. We are not technophiles but it is a great basic smartphone with a quality camera (no flash). Living regionally locked to Telstra is no problem. One issue is that it is a Windows phone so less apps out there for it. Eg no ABC mobile app.

    • Seriously can not believe people are still saying this. Microsoft Store has loads and it is growing way waaaay faster than the other two stores.

For a basic handset, this nothing can beat this price. Did you neglect to say it has full offline navigation?

      • +3

Seriously can not believe people are still saying this.

        Because it is true.

Microsoft Store has loads and it is growing way waaaay faster than the other two stores.

Because it's missing so many apps, which is likely the reason not many people are buying windows phone mobiles. Sure they probably could get away with using an alternative/third party app, but why should they have to when there are other similarly priced phones that have the apps they want.

      • +1

Yet, it still misses some of the most popular apps around:

        YouTube
        Snapchat
        Google Maps
        SoundCloud
        Gmail
        Tinder
        Uber
        Fitbit
        Yahoo Mail
        Dropbox
        Chrome

The ones that are there are updated much less frequently than Android or IOS.

I had a Windows Phone for 6 months and it was hopeless. Yes, finally, most of the most popular apps are now there, but it took ages and doesn't include any of the newest ones.

        • YouTube - lots of youtube apps, or use the mobile site, works well
Snapchat - 3rd party app available
Google Maps - web version works ok, but Nokia maps and drive are great anyway
SoundCloud - 3rd party app available
Gmail - you can add your email to the inbuilt client
Tinder - 3rd party app available
          Uber
          Fitbit
Yahoo Mail - you can add your email to the inbuilt client
Dropbox 3rd party app (6box is great)
Chrome - its a browser - you get IE built in. Do people list IE as a missing app on Android??

A lot of the 3rd party apps are better than first party. Unless there is a specific app you must have, app availability is not as big an issue as people make out.

I've had a Windows Phone for over a year, and wouldn't go back to iOS.

        • @oak:

Chrome is on both iOS and Android.

So your solution is a bunch of third party apps that likely cost money and pale in comparison to the originals since a lot of them get hacky with the API?

I hated all of the 3rd party stuff, except for MetroTube.

  • Note,it can be used with Boost or Aldi mobile.
I have had a mate do this and is happy.
It also has a micro sd card

    • +2

Pretty cheap when used with the Aldi pay as you go prepaid plan, $15 per year if you don't make a heap of calls or use a ton of data.

  • can it be used with telechoice?

  • +5

fkn neg because i stated the obvious? $99 locked to telstra compared to $128 unlocked as seen numerous times the last couple months…….

    • +2

Yeah, I agree. You pay a little more and not have to worry about unlocking it. Plus you also avoid any Telstra branding and associated delays when it comes to upgrading the software (I.e. official Nokia Cyan update for 8.1).

BTW, more colours with the unlocked models.

  • Has anybody tried to price match the Unlocked Lumia 520 from OW with this?

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/nokia-lumia-5…

    • 1 week ago the same unlocked phone was $125..not on special or voucher, I spotted it on their website and my friend collected in store, this week they've upped the price.

    • why would they, they aren't the same thing, the one on offer here is a telstra locked phone not the unlocked version, guess if you're lucky and the person wasn't paying attention or didn't care then maybe.

      • Fortunately (in this circumstance), most of the staff that I have dealt with in these type of stores aren't very tech savvy.

        • +3

Teenagers with no idea, you mean? ;)

        • @PinzVidz: they will normally get the store manager to approve price match?

    • Got a K-mart match this morning for one of these unlocked.

  • Anyone "patiently" waiting for official WP8.1 for this phone like me? Can I expect it available even if I didn't have an active SIM card, or will I need to be with a telco first? Mine is not Telstra locked.

    • As long as you can use the phone without the SIM in it, you will be able to upgrade the phone. It's just a matter of going into Settings —> Phone Update and checking for it.

I've got the 8.1 Developer Preview since around late April or so, and it's fine. You'll get an update for the official Nokia update (i.e., the features) when it is released.

The preview gives you all the features that come with 8.1, like the Notifications, with shortcuts for WiFi, Bluetooth, Flight Mode, & Rotation lock, and a display for the % battery you have left.

Plus you get Nokia Drive+ by default (so World Wide Navigation).

      http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/smartphones/1308571/how-to-ge…

      • I've been checking Phone Update everyday or so. As the official 8.1 has been released, or so I believe, might as well wait for the 520's turn and not stuff around with the Preview. I have a prepaid SIM that's not activated and using it with Wi-Fi.

  • Thanks OP. sorry for OT question, is there a tasker like app on Windows phone?

  • will this accept an aldi sim card without unlocking

    • +1

      Yes. Confirmed on two phones.

  • Just went to South Yarra VIC, OW talked with the Indian fellow, he spend like 30 min finding information. At the end he said, that he can price match on the Telstra pre-paid….

    • refurb, no thanks.

  • +1

no worries getting a price match to an unlocked one at my local k-mart. printed the page from the catalogue, presented it and walked out with an unlocked one.

    • No stock from my local Kmart. :( BigW wouldn't even do it until they confirmed stock at local AusPost, and the buggers weren't answering the phone.

  • Big W are selling these for $99 (save $50) saw in today's junk mail
