Penfolds Bin 389 is the classic South Australian red! Often referred to as 'Baby Grange' or 'Poor Man's Grange', Bin 389 was the wine that helped to build Penfolds' solid reputation with wine drinkers around the world. A magnificent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the very best regions and vineyards available to Peter Gago and his team, the robust nature of the Cabernet grape give structure and body to the wine while the opulent Shiraz fruit provides suppleness and intensity. A true icon of Australian wine first created by the legend himself, Max Schubert, Peter Gago is quoted as saying 'Through thick and thin, across all vintages, Bin 389 always delivers - benefitting from over half a century of practice!

      Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2011, $80

A lesser Bin 389, though testimony to the power of blending to rescue a difficult season, with almost the entire production of what would have been Bin 707 in the blend. This is a Bin 389 of structure, elegance and vibrancy more than flesh. The bouquet leads out closed, slowly opening into subtle, tangy red berry, red cherry, curry powder and pepper notes. The palate is taut, savoury, astringent and edgy, reminiscent of dried herbs, pepper, exotic spice, red cherries and tangy redcurrants of impressive line, integrity and persistence. It promises to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage, with a firm and finely structured tannin profile and elevated acidity making for a grippy and structured finish. A blend of 51% cabernet sauvignon and 49% shiraz from McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley, matured for 12 months in 30% new and 70% one-year-old American oak. Price rise from $75 to $80 this year. Available 6 March 2014.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cab Shiraz 2011 - $80
(McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz. 12 months in American oak hogsheads, 30% new, 70% 1yr old. 14.5% alc., TA 6.3g/L pH 3.63)
A miraculous wine. 707 quality Cabernet grapes for sure. Dark berry fruit and quite luscious - a magic act given the vintage (15% 2012 helps. Block 42 fruit does too). Falls away to finish but fans of 389 really won't be disappointed. The front and middle are classic 389, then a vintage derived hole, before normal Penfolds tannic service to finish. A standout, all things considered, if not quite a top flight 389 vintage. Impressed.
    18/20, 93/100+. Drink: 2014-2028+
