Question about Costco membership

I want to buy the killzone4 for ps4. Could someone tell me if i need a membership beforehand before i walk into Costco? I just want to confirm if they still have the games at low price before i decide if i do need to join the membership.

  • yes, there's a guy at the door who scans your card.

I guess you might be able to ask them, but yeah.

also I'd like to point out that you can go in with someone else if they have a membership.
plus if you become a member you can opt out for a full refund. (aslong as it's within a year)
You can't sign up multiple times in a year though.

Ive never been "scanned" in at Docklands Melbourne, but their is ALWAYS someone their checking to see that youactually have a card

    • +1

Its not scanned on the way in (only scanned at checkout), but they ask to see it….. That said, do what I do and just keep walking when asked to see your card. 9 out of 10 times they won't do anything, or as I've done a few times, when asked "Do you have have a membership?" I answer yes and keep walking.

Two things that piss me off about costco, having to show membership on the way in…. But I sort of understand this, and the stupid docket checkers on the way out!!

  • Technically yes. They often have someone at the door checking membership cards as you walk in. But depending on when you go they might not have staff there at the door.

If they stop you, you can sign up, go in and then request a membership refund on your way out. Or you could just bring along a friend who has a membership.

i thought they cant forbid people from entering.
but you cant buy if you are not member.
you still can buy food outside ie pizza and drinks

    • +3

Anyone can forbid anyone to go onto private property you just can't discriminate on race, sex etc. In this case Costco discriminates based on who is or isn't a member.

i thought they cant forbid people from entering.

if that was the case, you could also enter a Cinema without a ticket…

    • Try to walk into Parliament house topless and you'll see if they let you in or not ;)

  • +7

go in through the exit "to buy pizza" when there is a lot of foot traffic

    • +2

you have to go in that way to buy a membership anyway…

My understanding is that you can go to the store, have a look around; but you cannot purchase anything without the membership card. I visited Canberra store twice, once with friend and second alone. just tell the guy at door that you want to have a look around before getting membership. There should be no issues.

    • +1

I've seen them turn people away at the Canberra store before. It really depends on how busy it is.

      • Correct. The newly opened stores usually totally ban non-members on the weekends as usually the first few months are insanely busy but they usually let you in after a while.

Weekdays shouldn't be a problem unless it is unusually busy on a certain day

      There should be no issues.

Someone got shot by firing squat at the Ringwood store for doing that.

      • +5

        shot by firing squat

I think I'd prefer to be shot by a firing squad, personally…

        • Yeah, firing squat will be a disgusting mess

A few years ago I wanted to visit Costco Melbourne (Costco is finally coming to Adelaide this year, yay)

Door guy: "Hi, where's your membership card"
Me: "I don't have one. Can't I just go in and look around without buying?"
Door guy: "No, but you can sign up for a free day pass at the membership desk. Can't buy, but can browse"

Spent the next 15 minutes lining up and handing over all my contact details (including photo ID).

      • +7

I was expecting a far more dramatic climax of an ending to that story…

        :(

        • +4

          … AND… THEN…

I wandered around the store, but scarcely another 15 minutes passed before I stumbled and fell into an enormous jar of mayonnaise.

This is my home now. This freakishly large jar of mayonnaise is my home.

My fingers. MY FINGERS! Gone a little pruney, each, are, nonetheless, tasty.

Ok. Swype keyboard. Sony Z2. Waterproof. Mayoproof. Bought from OzBargain deal.

Tasty fingers and internet comments. All is not lost.
Costco has tried to kill me. And failed.

          This. Is. OzBargain.

          I. AM. CLUSTER!

      • +1

        Why would you do that?

        • +2

It does seem bizarre and unconscionable to require contact details and photo i.d. - just to wander, 'non-signed-up', around a store. (Even allowing for… 'certain dangers'.)

    • Hi guys,

I did this last month.. they let you in one time to have a look around.. but they take your details and you cant do it a second time.

  • +3

you can get a guest pass for the day from the membership area if you need to check the price before you decided to get full membership

  • Which Costco?

  • my understanding was that you can walk in to have a look but can not buy anything without membership. actually i walked into a costco in honolulu by mistake and no one stopped me there.

anyway i will try my luck or get a guest pass. thanks guys.

i was talking about auburn costco.

  • +2

From my experience at auburn costco:

"Hi sir do you have a card?"
    Me: "Yes"
    "Okay go on through"

they've always asked but never actually physically checked me because you cant buy anything without a card anyways

  • +1

Just go through the exit and go to the customer service desk. Explain you want to have a look around before committing to a membership.

They will give you a single visit pass, but of course you can't buy anything. No need to sneak in or anything like that.

  • I'd go and do my shopping (bread, milk, etc) and then walk in through the entrance holding my bags. When asked for my card, I'd start fumbling awkwardly with my bags until they said "Don't worry about it mate."

I feel this would work effecitvely unless the greeter was a Richard.

    • +4

I can't see how it would work when they need to scan your card before they can scan your items…

  • +1

    The facts are:
    1) You can enter Monday to Fridays with a "guest pass", no membership needed, good if you just want to look around.
    2) You cannot buy anything from within the store itself without a Costco membership as they ALWAYS ask for your card at the register.
    3) Guest passes are not available on weekends to look around, although sometimes at the door they may just let you in for a look anyway, but you can still not purchase unless you have a card or are with someone with a card (membership).

    • What about expired memberships? Do they actually scan your card at the checkout? What if it was expired would there be an "alert" on their checkout system?

      • Yes and yes.

      • Yes they scan your card, they put your number into the system.

Expired cards don't work, though they will probably get you in the door as they don't usually check expiration dates.

        • They will also offer to renew your membership at the checkout.

      • They must scan the membership card to start the checkout process.

might be able to help for a small fee

  • -1

Pay $60 fee. Try it for up to 11 months (ie, less than a year) and use as often as you like.
At 11 months ask for a refund. I did this and absolutely no questions or problems.
Worth doing if it is easy enough to get to the store.

    • +1

that will work as long as you do not want to re-join at a later date…

      • Yep, you essentially get banned at 12 month increments each time you join and refund the membership.

  • +1

Why don't you call them?. I call my local store all the time to confirm stock and price. Unlike Aldi Costco's store contact numbers are on their web site.

  • Do you think the game will be $60 cheaper at Costco than anywhere else?
