What to do with $200 worth of wines?

Looking to purchase something from Harvey Norman (don't go away yet), and they have a promo going on with which I will get a $200 case of wines. Here is the link: https://www.winepeople.com.au/jsp/offer/recr/au/wpe/recoffer…

Since I do not drink alcohol (fire away whatever you want to now), I was just seeking some advice on what I can do with that case of wine? Am I able to sell it? Giving it as a gift to someone is not an option since I am counting that the $200 will bring the price of my item down for me (only if it is possible). If there is no way I cannot sell it, then I won't buy the item now and will wait for a better offer.

Or can I haggle in store to not get the case of wines and get my item's price reduced?

You can't sell wine online unless you have a liquor license. If the wine is offered by the shop, then I'm sure you can tell them you don't want the wine and just want a cheaper price, but if the wine is offered by the manufacturer then I don't think the shop will be able to do anything. Can always gift the wine during Christmas time, that's what we give to all the male members in the family every Christmas. :)

You can't sell wine but there shouldn't be an issue with selling the unique code (on eBay) that allows someone access to the $200 case of wines.

    • Thanks for this suggestion. I didn't knew about being able to sell the code.

If you are using the wine as anything other than a bonus, don't buy.

The cases of 6 say RRP of $100, but that is nowhere near their market value. E.g. the Bird in Hand SSB is $20 on the Winepeople website, but it is $12.90 in Dan Murphy's - and has been MUCH cheaper in other places such as Vinomofo etc by the case.

If you are trying to sell the code, I doubt you would get much more than $30-40 - if that. People are pretty wary of these things, some other deals sign you up for a wine club that send you wine every few months unless you cancel.

If the item you want to buy is a good price, great. If you are factoring in close to $200 you can recoup - forget it.

    • Thanks for your great answer. This is what I was worried about as I know nothing about wines and their prices. I wasn't factoring the full $200 recoup, but I was thinking may be I might get $100 out of it and then it would be a great price for the item I want.

  • Go to a competitor, find out what their best price is and if it isn't as good as the HN with wine deal tell them about the deal and see what they can do to match.

We bought a new fridge the other week. Told the Joyce Mayne guy about the deal and he looked it up, made his prices a lot more competitive as he was keen to get our business. Went to HN to just have a look anyway (they are in the same complex) and the prices on the fridges were crap, even taking the wine into consideration. So quite happily went back to JM and got our fridge.

    • oh and if we went with the HN deal we were going to give the wines as a wedding gift. Pretty useless to us too.

    • That's really funny considering they're both the same company.
We have HN & JM in the same complex a well, must be some sort of tax dodge.

    • Problem is that I am in VIC and our closest Joyce Mayne is in Albury :(

The item I want to buy is HN exclusive and has been like that since it was introduced a year or so ago and hence they don't budge a lot on prices (they don't have any competitors).

  • Donate it to somewhere so they can raffle it.

  • Use it for cooking if you have no other choice.

  • It'll keep long enough to palm off as gifts individually if you want. You could ask a friend if they would buy it off you for $30-40. If you're in Brisbane, you could always give it to me. :)

    • Haha. Sorry mate as I am in Melbourne.

Good on you for not drinking, but you can save it for say xmas and play santa for family, friends (you'll make some new ones too) or donate to the xmas party @work say. Im sure it will be appreciated!

But this is OZB not give it away for free, so yeah gumtree the code/offer or the local supermarket for sale board if you don't have anyone closer that will take it or the case of your hands. (the good thing about the code is they can choose the offer)

    • Ah yes. Gumtree. Thanks for the complement and great suggestion. I think I would be better off selling this there.

  • List it in the OZ Bargain classifieds (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/classified)

edit NO don't do that. It's banned !
