[Steam] Free Game - Dead Island: Epidemic

400

Dead Island: Epidemic is free to install on steam.

Steam description: Install Dead Island Epidemic now and retain access once the weekend is over!

Instructions to Install: Just head over to the linked site (http://store.steampowered.com/app/222900/), scroll down, press 'Install Game' next to Dead Island: Epidemic (the one that DOES NOT include open weekend tag) and it will be linked to your steam account.

For some reason, it doesn't appear in Steam's My Games tab, I can however access it from the linked site by pressing 'Play Game' once it is registered to your steam account, i.e. download prompt opens up.

It's still in beta yeah? I got it free a couple of weeks ago and it came with 4 gift copies to give to friends. It's got in-app purchases.

    • I think so, on steam it says 'Early Access Game'.

    • do you get the full game when it is released?

      • The game will be Free to Play when it's released which is why some of us don't feel like this is even a deal in the first place.

This game is a free to play MOBA, powered mostly by micro transactions like League of Legends and DOTA and also featuring items and blueprints that can be purchased with real money. It's most likely free to play on release.

Thats fine as long as it's not pay to win.

        What's the difference?

        • Currently the game has items that can be earned both ways: grinding and purchasing. If you choose to purchase a weapon, you still need to grind your character to the prerequisite level before you can equip it.

There are also XP and money boosts that you can purchase with either real money or in game currency. According to the dev:

We are going to offer common F2P-content like convenience items, boosts, cosmetics & characters. Everything you can buy can be unlocked through playing in a similar shape or form.

The game is still Beta though so things are added continually. I havent fired up the game in about a month now. Lets hope it stays that way.

If players who pay for microtransactions get a significant advantage over players who play for free, then it's often considered "pay-to-win". Some games even require you to pay in order to advance, or to progress normally without paying is so cripplingly slow that you essentially have to pay to play.

Obviously game developers still want to get paid for their work, and therefore paying players will get some form of advantage over non-paying players, but there is a spectrum of good to purely money-sucking F2P models. I prefer F2P games that provide microtransactions to broaden the gaming experience without negatively affecting gameplay, such as offering purely cosmetic in-game models or items, or maybe accelerate regular progression/grinding speed of the game, although the game is still quite enjoyable without paying a cent.

        • Obviously game developers still want to get paid for their work, and therefore paying players will get some form of advantage over non-paying players

I understand the Valve games like DOTA2 and TF2 just have cosmetic items like hats, right? They don't actually give an advantage, just look cool.

I'd be surprised if all the pay-to-win games in the world made as much money as those two…

          @dlaso:

Path of Exile is a perfect example of this, amazing game but micro transactions are purely cosmetic.

  • Steam: Install Dead Island Epidemic now and retain access once the weekend is over!, I am assuming people wont have access to this game once the weekend is over UNLESS they install the game and link it to their steam accounts.

Dead Island: Epidemic is currently an early access title that will eventually be free to play. It was previously locked to owners of the first two Dead Island games who received free guest passes.

I assume this is just them opening it up a little more to introduce more players than the currently limited pool for additional testing purposes.

Not sure it qualifies as a deal or a bargain though.

    • For the people who don't already have access to this game. Once you hit the 'INSTALL GAME' option, it will linked to your steam account. once the game is linked, it will remain permanently in your steam account, even after the weekend up until the game itself goes free-to-play.

      • You can remove free games from your account if you want though.

    • But yea, I agree, it isn't that big of a bargain. Not a major one anyway. I just thought i'd put this up for the people that didn't know about it.

I didn't even know about it. Thanks

      • DI Epidemic up until now has been a pay to access game through a purchase of the Patient Zero, DEADication, or Contagion packs while it is in the early access phase unless you owned any of the previous Dead Island titles and received a gift copy or someone gifted you a copy from their stash.

Unless Deep Silver has stated otherwise, once you have the game in your Steam library it won't be taken away so I'm confused why you stated 'access to… and retain…' when there is no statement from Deep Silver that I can see on their website or the store page within Steam that says access will be taken away after the weekend.

Unless you can provide evidence to the contrary, can you please edit your statement above as the information is incorrect and could lead some to think that after the weekend they will lose their access.

        Cheers

        • Description on the steam page (linked above)
          Play Dead Island: Epidemic
Install Dead Island Epidemic now and retain access once the weekend is over!
          INSTALL GAME

Although it doesn't specifically say that the game cannot be accessed once the weekend is over, it has the option to 'INSTALL GAME' unlike normal free-to-play games. Now I don't have any knowledge about statements from Deep Silver itself.
I am basing my evidence from the steam page and my assumption that this game will not be accessible after the open weekend (from the description).

  • Beware of lag!

Pass… decided to watch the intro video on Steam lol, the high pitch voice put me off before I seen any action, then it reminded me of one of those old parlour games I played back in the 80's

With so much better available these days this rates a 2 out of 10 for me

Rating a game when you haven't even played it.. Well done

      • Well thank you djevoultion but its really not difficult to do, like a preview for a movie to decide whether or not I'll bother watching the whole thing, in this case wasting my time installing/uninstalling.

        • In both cases you can't rate the game/movie, all you are doing is rating your appeal to want to watch/play it.

If you went through life judging everything on first impressions you'd miss out on a hell of a lot.
