Very good price for a high-spec android tv box.
It's not the best model, which is the S89-H with hardware dobly/dts decoding, but for the money it is very good.

  • Honestly I think your far better off with an OUYA, Chromecast or waiting for one of the new Android TV Boxes.

  • Minix X8-H looks promising.

I've had one of these since May and initially it was disappointing due to so many bugs etc., however consistent firmware updates have improved this system immensely and now there are even stand alone unix installs available to turn it into a mini PC - check www.freaktab.com for latest news in the AMlogic tv section.

My interest is in the OpenELEC build for these devices. XBMC for Android runs well, but doesn't support auto framerate adjust, so I think when OpenELEC is fully ported I'll be flashing my firmware with that.

  • what do these offer over Chromecast or a WD Live box? I guess the chromecast cant have a harddrive connected or can it?

    • I can see cromecast is just like USB stick size no way you can add anything

      • You can't wirelessly access a drive with the chromecast?

        • You can use Plex to stream from network drives

This will make your TV into a smart TV (somewhat). Chrome cast simply links your TV to a smart device wirelessly so your TV can stream stuff.

The TV box allows way more functionality. especially when you have a wireles keyboard and mouse connected.

      • yes, with this device you can play most android games on your TV (some games which need touchscreen you can either use a wireless/bluetooth mouse and keyboard, or use a remote control app and use your android phone or tablet as the control box (I use my nexus 7 for touchscreen games etc. on the larger screen)), also you can run various media players for music, video, streaming content etc.

so I have XBMC, sbs catchup, abc catchup apps and plex for media from my local network.

I can also use android chrome to surf the web, check email etc.

but one of my main uses is retroarch with 4x bluetooth joypads and retro console and arcade machine emulation on the large screen. get a bunch of old gits around for gauntlet and The Simpsons arcade gaming goodness :)

I also use this box for my usenet downloads, less power usage than having my desktop on all night doing it.

  • Anyone here has tronsmart t1000?

  • … nice

  • I've tried lots of various different Android boxes like this and the Midnight MX Box from amazon has been the best even though currently its only dual core. (Note that I only use Plex on them).

  • I have this box. I cannot recommend it for the average user but its pretty great for a tech-head. $99 Delivered is a stellar price for the 16gig model. There's also a Linux port available for it btw.

  • Wouldn't it be better buying something like the amazon fire TV?
