PayPal now charges your bank account by default

Being a old time seller on eBay, we rarely think twice when clicking pay now through paypal

but i noticed, paypal recently changed the default to bank account payment

I'm sure they are doing this to save on cc processing fees = better margins for paypal.

but this is cheeky, because i never authorised them to use my bank account for payment AND you can't change it back to CC for default payment

bastards, really

I agree- this is a sneak thing and it's got me once or twice. Sucks especially when you: Don't have money in the account OR it's in a foreign currency.

For foreign currency, I always used my 28 Degrees card (have changed its' settings to charge in original currency). So good- paid $1025USD today converted to $1091 (like $2 more that the actual rate!) . Paypal converted it to ~$1120 from my bank account.

Always been that way for me… Really annoying!

It has always been the case.
I like the convenience of having my bank account there for withdrawal purposes.

Has always done this for me. Very annoying.
Can select default credit card, but it always selects bank transfer when paying for anything, have to select credit card option every time.

I ended up removing the bank account so it defaults to one of my credit cards saved.

    • +1, I also did this some time ago after accidently spending form the back account a few times.

    • When I tried removing my bank account it said something about the account might be limited or something? Havent you had any issues?

    always by defualt

    • Not always, it changed about 5-6 years ago

edit, scratch that it was probably about 8-9 years ago

Change your bank a/c to ING Saving Maximiser which they can't Direct Debit.

    • can you withdraw money to that account?

      • yes, you can transfer money from paypal to ING saving maximiser

    • Any idea if it works with CMB saving account as well?

      • Not sure.

  • Ive noticed this too, everytime I make a payment my cards aren't listed on checkout, although they are listed when I login to paypal.

Its just a major drain since it takes a few days for the funds to clear using echeques

  • Not correct. I have my paypal account linked to my ING savings max and it can direct debit from it.
In fact have been using the Max account as my primary PayPal linked account for over a year now.

  • i have 2 cards linked to paypal…

AMEX so I get extra points when paying in Aussie dollars

VISA less points, but no additional fees when paying foreign

I have notice ebay will choose the default card that is less desirbale for me (ie more desirable for them) every time.
EG… when making an international purchase it chooses AMEX as default (which leads to a fee) and when I make a local purchase is chooses my VISA (which means I get less points).

Needless to say, I change to paying card each time.

  • It appears this is a new thing which happened this month. (It effects more ebay sellers as when end of month billing occurs the invoice used to automatically take it from my amex via paypal, yesterday i noticed it cleaned my bank account).

Going to write a complaint to paypal as this was a very sneaky move… and leaves me with only the cash in my pocket for this week. :(
