Surge Protector Required for Warranty?

Didn't have much luck with Google.

Got a new Bosch dishwasher. Apparently the dishwasher is not covered under warranty unless it's connected via a surge protector. True, or a slack upsale attempt?

For a moment I thought it was JV

I've heard of situations where warranty has not covered damage caused by a power surge. My guess is it's a re-working of the truth in order to get an upsell

  • Super.

Exactly why I'm a skeptic of pretty much anything I hear that doesn't have multiple sources. Sounded like a load of nonsense.
20 odd bucks profit on a surge protector * every appliance they sell = a lot of $
    Good Guys btw.

    • Not only is it untrue but it's in breach of consumer law to be telling people these things. Several major retailers in the past have been fined for giving out such advice. The fines are huge too. You should pass o a complaint to Fair Trading.

  • I doubt a manufacturer would be able to dictate such warranty terms. It can't be conditional on you buying another device.

However if the equipment really was damaged by a power surge, warranty shouldn't cover that as it isn't a product fault.

  • Good Guys, they said the same when we bought a front loader washer. It is not true.
But a power surge (eg lightning) isnt covered under warranty anyway.

  • It makes sense given a power surge isn't classified as normal operating conditions, hence the warranty won't cover if it is damaged by it.

    • Yeah - but they were saying the warranty on anything electronic is void unless it's connected via a surge protector as per Bosch's terms and conditions.

AKA, anything electronic breaks = too bad so sad you didn't buy our upsell.
Get hit with 10,0000,0000,000 volts and on surge protector = covered

Sounded like complete nonsense, and turns out it is.

  • You can claim damage from a power surge against Energy Australia? or something anyway. Probably more hassle than its worth though.
