Using e-tax without going through mygov

For anyone looking to lodge their tax online without going through and signing up to mygov, there is a sneak workaround that can be used that I found on whirlpool. Unfortunately I found this after submitting mine. A lot of people in the thread have used it successfully too.

"When you need to put in your mygov username and password (screen 340 for pre-fill, screen 8240 for lodgement), simply enter taxhelp as your mygov username and click the button below (Prefill or Lodge to the ATO) and you will then be offered the verification path used previously in e-tax. You'll then need a Notice of Assessment (NOA) or shared secret details to proceed."

This may change in 2015 however.

Nice share. but why wouldnt you want to register in mygov?

Because it is a pain in the ass!! I have had to do about 10 tax returns for friends/family using etax and have had to go through the signup so many times it is ridiculous hahaha. Thanks for the post!!!

      • Nice hack. In the end mygov will be good because it can link up with Medicare, Centrelink and a bunch of other things under one roof. Australia Card by stealth.

    • I personally didn't think there was a problem and thought it was kinda handy. However reading around it seems it is weakly secured as well as poorly designed.

  • This method can actually get you into deep trouble. That code is only to be used by Tax Help Volunteers. When that code is used, your IP address is recorded. Seeing as Tax Help Volunteers run their services from certain locations, the inconsistency may be picked up.

Use it at your own risk.

Seeing as mygov seems to be where they are going with tax returns now (no matter how terrible it is), I say just sign up for an account now to save yourself from doing it in the future.

In fact the same whirlpool forum is now having countless comments of people getting notifications of delays in their returns being processed due to "further verification" being required, they are calling the ATO and being told 8-12 weeks and that they will be required to provide documents. So yeah. if you want to be audited you should use this method I guess.

  • Be careful with e-tax. There are a number of commercial sites that look very much like the ATO e-tax site. Then when you're entered your information, you get asked for a fee to finalise the return!!! So make sure you are using the government website……

  • I have a xp on my laptop & looks like etax 2014 doesn't support xp. Any solutions to use with xp.

Easy. Screen shot saying it's not xp compatible. New computer now tax deductible.

    • run a vm with window 7 on it

  • Reply to PissLUR. One reason would be that you are unable to. My husband and I share the same email address just like we've always shared the same residential and postal address, we're happy sharing. Unfortunately mygov won't allow us to both join using the same email address. For us creating a new email address would be pointless, as we would never use it and it would eventually close. So thank you Happychild 100 for that info on how to by pass, cause now I might be able to do my husbands tax for him, online.

    • Read the whirlpool forum about being audited as part of using the bypass method before you do. Just be aware of what you are getting into first.

Fyi, why couldn't you setup a new free gmail address and have all messages automatically forward to your current email? That way you wouldn't need to login or check your new email address ever. And Gmail doesn't close after 6 months.

      • Which posts mention any audit as a result of using mygov?

I can't find any evidence of this. Just people asking questions about what an audit would look like and how far back you should keep documents.

  • Just wonder howmany people reverted to paper filling? It's not wrong is it, if you don't want to register MyGov and does it cause any reason for ATO to tend to audit you more? I didn't think twice and paper filled the snail mail way. I expect a generous refund but in 8-12 weeks, and I am happy to wait. I may have read correctly many taxpayers not wanting to do the MyGov thing and were going back to paper filling. The reason you register your MyGov number is so that Centrelink can easily access your ATO tax return for the year, share info with each other and corroborate info that you declared to Centrelink re earnings/assets tallies with what you declare to ATO! They have been doing it in the past for a long time, but had to do it the roundabout way via waiting for ATO to submit the tax return info to them. Now it is all easily connected via a keystroke, thanks to your MyGov registration number. It is actually a sneaky but legal way of imparting and obtaining info that should otherwise be protected by privacy laws. No need to worry if you are not hiding anything from Centrelink, or not receiving benefits.
