Ebay sales - received echeque payment through paypal

Hi all,

I recently sold a tablet on Ebay. I received the payment via paypal - echeque. I understand that there is no backup source / credit card on the buyers account, therefore echeque which takes a week to clear.

At first I thought it may have been a fraudulent buyer as the ebay user was newly created, but the payment cleared today on my paypal account. I have already withdrawn it to my account. Is it safe to post the item now, or should I wait until it clears on my bank account?

Any dangers?

  • Wait till it is cleared, usually 3-4 days.

  • I was just reading somewhere that it does not really matter. The buyer could still declare the transaction as fraudulent and recharge, so my paypal account would go into a negative balance.

I will definitely send via registered mail for proof.

    Hopefully all will be good…

  • I had this before, so I think it's safe if you have the funds cleared in your account.

Just wait until PP sends an E-mail to tell you it's OK to send (mine got "An eCheque payment to you has cleared").

  • eCheque is cleared in my paypal account and paypal says "OK to send". I have withdrawn the fund to my bank account, but this has not cleared yet.

    • +1

Just send by registered post, insured if you want to have bit of extra protection and you will be fine.

  • They are probably just under 18 and don't have visa/mastercard

An eCheque is just waiting for the transfer of money from their bank to paypal then the paypal funds go to you immediately once it's cleared.

It's just quicker than transferring money from their bank to paypal account then sending money manually using their paypal balance.

I used it all the time before I was 18 when I hadn't bothered topping up my paypal account

  • A newly created Ebay account + eCheque payment made me a bit worry.

Should be all good then, I report back if it was fraud…

  • PayPal often default to bank account as the payment source. Sometimes the payer doesn't even realise. You need to manually change the source to ensure it goes through immediately.
