Coles -- no refunds on mobile phones?

Today I attempted to a return an unopened box mobile phone to Coles and they refused, saying it was against their policy. They will accept returns of mobile phones only if they are defective.

Has anyone else encountered this or are they shitting me?

  • Coles no longer list their return policy online by the looks of it. But yes that is the general policy.

    • I'm surprised. I've returned phones to Kmart.

Oh Well. I hope the phone doesn't suffer from a severe over-voltage or something like that the first time I charge it.

Why do you return phones (plural) so often?

      • Have you bought any phones from Kmart or Coles that result in a severe over voltage? I highly doubt it.

Sounds like another Coles store is in order for your "defective" phone.

A faulty phone is likely to be replaced with another, so why bother frying it…. If Coles policy is not to allow returns, then they will insist on this for a faulty phone.

Unless of course you can find a Coles store that has run out of the model, so they cant replace it.

Unfortunately they are not liable to refund as this is not a requirement of consumer legislation, even though they do so on many other items.

My guess is that they have to do a lot of paper work to notify change of ownership as they need to record purchases of mobile phones with sims under the telecommunications Act

Boshait… They are only obligated to refund if the product is faulty or unsuitable for its intended purpose.
Because you have changed your mind no refund is required by law.
Best to make sure you want something before you buy it.

  • I know its 4 years old but if I bought a phone for the express purpose of rooting and using it, and I borked the rooting of it so it needed to be flashed to factory condition, I could return this as its unsuitable for its intended purpose? I feel phone manufactures have an obligation to support their software for a number of years after releasing it by offering the firmware and flashing tool available to download.

Coles also told me today that its a one month return time limit for our store here in murwillumbah and that they usually replaced faulty items. But their website says "Refunds, returns and exchanges
If you’re not happy with something you’ve bought or you’ve simply picked up the wrong item, please ask for assistance from our Customer Service Desk team.

On our Coles branded products our promise is to provide you with high quality products to enjoy every day. If you are not 100% satisfied, let us know and we’ll happily give you a full refund or replacement - that’s a guarantee you can count on."

So I guess it goes on how pushy you are?
