First time building a PC, recommendation pls!

Hi, so Im planning on building a PC suitable for some gaming and is capable of photoshopping stuff. Problem is Ima newbiew so I need some help.
Some of the games played are CS:GO, Hitman Absolution, Dead Space 3, Sims 3. I want to be able to play games in the future, dont mind if its not top quality.
Not looking at doing any overclocking, or techy modification. Dont need monitor or keyboard/mouse/speakers.

Is there anything that Im missing or is not compatible, or any cheaper alternatives? Definitely want to keep the cost low as possible without sacrificing too much. Preferable if item is located in SA for pick up, unless it can be delivered for a really gd price.

Let me know what you think, cheers!

CPU: Intel i5 4460 3.2GHz (3.4GHz Turbo) Quad Core CPU$200
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Pro4 $107
RAM: Patriot Signature 8GB Single DDR3-1600 - PSD38G16002H $84
GPU: Gigabyte R9 270 OC 2GB $198 or Sapphire SA-R9270X-2GD5-OC $219
Storage: WD Cavier Blue 3.5" Blue 1TB WD10EZEX HDD $59
Case+PSU: Thermaltake Versa H22 CA-3B3-50M1NA-00 USB3.0 Black Mid Tower Case with 500W PSU $77
Dvd Drive: ASUS Black 24x DVD-RW Writer Retail $22

post + comments, the line up looks similar to me

    • Way over my budget =\

  • Looks good for the price. You might want to get an R9 280 though, much better performance and won't cost you too much extra. Apart from that it looks fine. Also your motherboard is mATX, which is small. You might want to get an mATX case, it'll take up a smaller footprint. If you don't mind space, then it's fine though :)

  • Man who needs a dvd drive nowadays :) Do you have a computer or a laptop in a house that already has a DVD drive? If so, you only need one in the household to burn discs and make ISO images. the ONLY time you will ever use a dvd is to install Windows, all your games I bet will be digitally delivered anyway.

Drop the DVD drive, use the savings on a better graphics card perhaps? I'd look at a GTX 760 or a 280. Both have the same price of $259.

Gainward (blower style fan) GTX 760

    Gigabyte (twin fan) R9 280

  • Your selected GPUs won't work with the PSU.

PSU only comes with 1x 6pin PCIe cable while all the suggested GPUs require at least 2x PCIe.

    Grab a non-Gigabyte R9 270 with 1x 6pin requirements.

Or get the case + PSU separate.

    • Actually some video cards include a Molex to 6 pin PCIE power adapter cable.

Not that I would recommend using it, if your PSU lacks 2x 6 pin connector's that's probably a sign that the PSU is too low end. I'd buy a better PSU OP.

  • Have a look at www.jw.com.au . They have pre built gaming systems that you can modify. Give them a buzz and they can advise on the best setup for the budget and what its used for.
as for people suggesting no dvd drive, get one. A decent LG drive will cost you around $30. It will save you a massive headache having to mess around with OS and software installs. Not everyone downloads their stuff.
Also for the OS HDD, get an ssd. And perhaps a hybrid for the game installs and storage.

    • Those build are really bad even when accounting for build cost.
      * Generic PSU - Can blow up and take down the PC
      * CPU heavy, GPU weak (i7 for gaming!?)
      * low-mid range GPUs in everything except the $1999 and $2999 rig
      * No name mobos
      * 1333MHz budget RAM - 1600MHz CL9 should be the standard (except for budget/office PCs)

Only pre-builts gaming rigs I recommend are the PCCG systems.

If you want custom built system go with Scorptec.

  • Get a better HDD, the WD Blue is going to slow down your machine.
I've got a 120GB SSD for the OS in my gaming PC and a WD Caviar Black 2GB for game installs and WD Caviar Black 1GB for scratch area and downloads.

Edit: Also get case and PSU separately. Included PSUs are usually cheap and nasty.

    • Don't waste money on WD Blacks since they are no faster than other 7200RPM drives. Unless you're after the 5 year warranty they offer.

An SSD will indeed benefit the system but the GPU and PSU are higher priority unless he can stretch the budget.

  • Thanks for everyones advice, its exactly what I needed help with. So I've decided to ditch the Thermaltake Case+PSU and get the separately as suggested.

    Thinking either
    Case:
    Coolermaster RC-350 $53
    Coolermaster RC-380 $54
    Coolermaster NSE-400-KWN2 N Series N400 $59

    PSU:
    Corsair CMPSU-500CXV3 500Watt 80Plus Bronze ATX $79

Looks like the cheapest R9 280 is about $260. Considering Im not planning on playing high demanding games like Battlefied 4/5/6, Crysis 3, Metro etc is the 270x good enough for what I need? Most of the listed games play ok on my HP Pavilion G6-2235TX i7 AMD Radeon HD 7670M laptop, but can sometimes lag a little bit.

    • depends on your monitor size
i have that same GPU (gigabyte 270oc)

1080p works fine on every game i have tried recently
      most are at max settings

price has come down for the 280 of late …there used to be a 100 dollar difference when i got my comp
if its only 50 odd dollars i would get the 280
