Amaysim racking the price up by $5 upto $44.90/month but included a GB for data.. What are your views?

Got an email just now. Amaysim has made unlimited a bit dearer but then included 5gb in there.I dont need 5gb. I can do with 4. What do u think this is ? Isnt that forcing u to pay $5 extra. They should leave old plans as they are "grandfather plans" and make new plans available to new customers or those old customers who want them.

No lock in contracts means they can do what they want.

Clearly Amaysim have done the maths and its a $$ grab for them. Majority would probably be in your situation and not using the full 4GB either.

    • ^This (there's an upside and a downside to no lock in)

More than likely Optus charging more Network access fees..

  • With data billed in MB increments its a lousy offer from them, 1GB is more like 100mb
Iam just signing up for Lebara, will see how it goes.

    • how much is lebara? I've heard lyca has $29.95 but they only offer 2gb. I think i should try with them. if i am using more data, I'll come back to amaysim

      • Not too long ago Lyca was only offering 2G speeds (so effectively no internet).

Anyone can confirm whether or not 3G is now available with that mob. Cheers

        • +1

Yes, Lyca was just on Telstra 2G - now 3G.
I made reference to Lycamobile's new arrangements in this recent comment.

        • @Tas: Thanks Tas. Do you have personal experience with how well the Internet works now with this mob?

        • +1

          @ginmi:
No personal experience with Lyca, but you should find data-speed (and their general Telstra, non-NextG, 3G coverage to be fine).

If you're keen on having 4G access, and are not fussed with a perceived need to be on Telstra, I'm just about to post a comment at the tail-end of yesterday's Amaysim 'deal' debacle, that might be of interest to you and some others in this thread, though not if you're chasing more than 2.5GB's of monthly data-allowance.

        • I have ported to Lycamobile about a week ago from Boost. Data seems a bit slower but 2gb a month with unlimited calls and sms (no mms tho) for $30 seems pretty good. Going to port the wife's number across end of this month.

I haven't been out and about much this week (as I had my appendix out) but curious to see how reception on my daily commute into Sydney CBD next week.

I expect it to be on par with Aldi mobile (another Telstra wholesale user).

I have noticed that my phone shows always roaming which seems to be the norm with Lycamobile set up.

Edit: just did my first speed test 0.24mbps geez that is slow! Doesnt seem that bad in real word terms for internet browsing tho.

      1GB is more like 100mb

      That's a bit extreme..
I did the maths (here @scubacoles: )on my Live Connected invoices and found that all other things being equal, per MB billing added roughly 25% to my "usage".
If you're using 4Gb now, that means that the "extra" Gb could be chewed up by the different billing (but if you're using 4Gb/month it's likely that your sessions will be longer/larger so the difference will be lower.

  • Funny just went to website http://www.amaysim.com.au/

and get a pic of a mouse :)

  • Does anyone know if this is still being sold now it's moved to Optus? http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/ This is 5GB & $30/45days.

Alternatively, Lyca Mobile has $29.90/mth for 2GB + 2GB pack for $10 = $39.90 https://account.lycamobile.com.au/QuickTop-Up.aspx?lang=en This would give you 4GB and be the same price as Amaysim before the price rise.

PS - not sure was 3GB data is $25, when 2GB is $10??? Why wouldn't you buy 2x2GB?

Any one found anything with 4GB or 5GB that is better than Amaysim'z new $44.90 price?

      Lebara has $4gb for 39.95

      @ donkey12

Woolies mobile has not been available to new clients for months :)

tis a good plan $26 for 45 Days and 5GB download. (lucky enough to grab sims before disappeared)

    • I highly recommend NOT to go lycan mobile
it might be telstra but the data speed it incredibly slow.

I consistently use less than 1GB per month, so 4GB per month is overkill for me. 5GB for an extra $5 is definitely not needed.

BOOST have an unlimited talk and text with 2GB of data per month for $40. Yes, its only 2GB but that's enough for me.

Has anyone had any experience with BOOST?

Is there anything that I'm obviously overlooking?

    • The one flaw in you plan might be handset compatibility…
Your phone will need to be capable of receiving 850MHz 3G (WCDMA)
      Otherwise it should be win-win-win
Better Coverage (full NextG network), cheaper price, faster data

    That's not Amaysim for $45!

I don't understand why people spend more than $40 on pre-paid each month, I know it's good to be free from a contract, I just hate how most limit the pre-paid to 30days to expire, such a big scam, you might as well go on a contract!

I like Aldi mobile as the credit don't expire in 30days and they give you 365days! Woolworth is good value and at least they give you 45days and decent GB's of data.

As a true Ozbargainer: I stayed with Vodafone when I renewed it, I bargained with the sales operator, I got a new Sony Xperia Z with HD and Quad Core, 1GB of data for $29 a month. Everywhere I go these days I always manage to get free wi-fi so I guess I don't need 4GB or more, most of the time I use Skype, messenger and kakoa talk to talk these days.

My example of poor budgeting by a pre-paid user(my GF) in the last 2years: Spends $50 each month on pre-paid with optus, buys a Galaxy Note3 outright and a HTC One before that.

    24 months: $1200
    note 3: $750
    HTC one: $680
    Total: $2630 divide that by 24= $109.583333333333333333333333333333333333

If she went on a contract: $60-70 a month… which is still too much for my liking.

I just hope my phone won't break, I have 14months to go and my phone is working great.

The flipside is that she could have been on a Live Connected $12 plan for the same (or probably better) inclusions and the same network (sans 4G)

      • dont think the $12 is still up for grab.. the lowest is $19

        • My partner was still on this plan, but it's going up by $10 per month soon.

  • What about Telstra where I could get 3.8 GB $1000 worth of calls and unlimited messaging for $50? Seems like a good alternative with a much better connection.

  • Here at amaysim, we're proud of offering what we reckon are some of the best mobile plans in Oz. With that in mind, we're writing to let you know about a change that's coming up, which was a tough one for us to make.
As of 1 September 2014, your amaysim AS YOU GO will no longer include free access to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn. Visiting these sites will count towards your data usage from September.

take less selfies to post on social media and you can go down a plan

  • I just registered my complaint to amaysim about this price increase on their website.
Had more phones to convert over to the amaysim plan, but will be shopping around for better deal!

  • At least they give you 1GB extra.
I still remember Aldi just kept increasing the price while decreasing data allowance, simply terrible.
