What's in your toolbox? Help me start

Hi everyone,
Recently at work I have been designing different products, prototyping and getting them made to onsell and I have really built an appetite for it.

Looking to see what else I can build, innovate and invent in my own time to make life a little sweeter, I would like to put together a toolbox / set of all the essentials I will need so goes my question: what's in your toolbox?

As rules to help me build, I would like to try and keep to the essentials and choose smart rather than wide.

First on my list is a; magnetic ratchet screwdriver set, a small cordless drill and a variety of small screws, washers and nuts.

Would appreciate advice, brand tips and even suggestions on what to build. My first project will probably be an led light box controlled by an audrino board so help me make it a reality!

Thanks
Nima

Perhaps soldering tools if you're into that stuff. Also good to keep a common box of electronic components around, e.g. a set of resistors and diodes. Back in the old days, if your electronic goods stopped working it'd likely be because you've smoked a diode, so you could just solder a new one in and you'd be good to go. These days everything is SMD though, so I'm not sure how handy you'd find electronic stuff, but if you're working with stuff like LED light boxes and Audrino boards, then it'll be good to have.

  • If it's an electronic toolkit then look at what sort of projects you want to do to figure out what should be included.
ifixit is a good starting point for working on devices as they give a breakdown on tools required for different tasks.

Personally aside from the usual stuff, I have my precision screwdriver set with lots of attachments, standard ratchet screwdriver with lots of bits, network cable tester and crimper, spudgers (plastic and metal), picks, soldering iron, screws/jumpers/spacers, wire strippers, the list goes on.

Find a nice looking toolkit with tools largely matching your requirements from above, then add individual items for it.

  • Get a meter and learn how to use it.
