  • Good price.
The higher model: D6300 for $203.47

  • Thanks, I had another look at the Netgear AC3200 R8000 and purchased it for $218.26 shipped with coupon code above.

Just letting people know, if you purchase the R8000 you will need a modem if you are on adsl, as the R8000 is a router only, not a modem router like posted above.

As an owner of the D6200 I would go a dlink over this (and yes I realise what Im saying!). For laptops and general wireless of less than 5 connections at a time this is fine. The major issues I have found:

    • The gigabit ports seem to have issues with traffic management - ended up getting a dedicated port to resolve drop out/latency issues.
    • Android devices hate this router (two SG4 phones drop in and out).

I consider myself a bit of a power user and really wished I did my research prior to getting this.

Its a good price (netgear were bundling the wireless AC1200 usb stick with with mine) for $169 at the time.

Do your research though and spend the extra dollars if you have 10 or so wireless / wired devices.

    • When I took my work iPads home to set up I got to about 27 wireless devices before they wouldn't communicate properly.

  • Hi, i am new to ozbargain.

One question, hope anyone here can help me. I have ADSL2+ installed recently, used Huawei modem router bought from TPG, but my speedtest is appalling, best 3mbps, worst 0.1mbps, the technician came and said my area normal only get 3mbps (Wantirna, Vic). I have a tvbox which i used wifi mode to watch programs but constantly had problems (download speed too low to enable program be broadcast), as my phone port is in kitchen, so is my modem router. hence, i rely on wifi instead of wired connection to my tvbox. What should i get in order to enable better internet speed for watching my Tvbox? i hear something about powerline adaptor, but wasn;t sure it is the right thing for my situation or not, hope my fellow ozbargainers can advice me. Many thanks

    • What sync speed do you get?
I got a "technicolor" modem from "Belong" as part of my subscription, which sync 20% lower than my netgear. A good modem makes a bit difference.
Powerline adapters are more reliable than WiFi, and the bandwidth will far exceed your internet speed. I personally have a more reliable connection with this for my tv. Keep an eye out for the specials on Ozbargain. Try to get a 500mbps one, as they are now about as cheap as the older 200mbps ones. Avoid using them on surge-protecting boards (they kill the signal).

      • Dear make it so,

thanks for your reply. my upload speed is 0.5mbps. so best i get both a good modem (like this one Netgear AC1200) AND a powerline adaptor to get the best internet speed for my tv?
        thanks for advice.

        • It's probably your download speed that matters most. But you mentioned a speed test gave about 3mbps, so probably not much higher than that.
This is a great modem/router for people who want to use the powerful wireless capability. But you just need to get a few mbps through, so it's probably overkill for you. Even if your tvbox is compatible with AC (unlikely), you won't notice the difference. If you have a problem with the reliability of your wireless signal (as opposed to the bandwidth), then a powerline adapter will help you. You would not have to replace your existing modem, because I suspect your modem may not be to blame. You simply have a slow connection (and possibly a WiFi reliability issue).

    • How far do you live from your adsl exchange? More importantly, what is your cable length? Use this to find out:

      http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/detailedsummarystart.php

If it reports that you have a cable length of ~3.5km+ then I would say that you are getting your expected speeds and there is not much you could do you improve this. Getting a better modem may help keep your connection more stable, but it probably won't give you faster speeds.

      • Dear Nero,
thank you for your comment. I couldn't use the link you put there to check the distance, but i used TPG's coverage map to check and apparently my house is 3-4.5km away from ADSL exchange, (the TPG's map said should have sync speed of 6413kbps for ADSL2+ for the distance 3-4.5km.) However, my speed test can range from when good 2.8mbps (download) to bad 0.1mbps (download) worst. is this normal? how can the speed vary so much?

        • Do you have any home phones connected without filters? I had similar issues and they were solved by installing filters on all the phones connected.

Did you do your speed test on wifi or through ethernet?

        • @Nero: Dear Nero,
i didn;t connect my phone port to any phone, as i don;t use it anyway.
i speed test both wifi and through ethernet just now, both came back similar results.

          your advice is muchly appreciated

        • What I would do next would be to call up tpg and have them run some tests from their end, they may find you have a poor connection or if not, you may possibly have a dodgy modem.

  • Last time when Dicksmith ebay had 20% off netgear R7000 (AC1900, the best modem at the time) can be bought for just $170 delivered.

D6300 is a POS modem router. I wouldn't be suprise this one would be the same. Don't be wonder struck with WIFI AC at a cheap price. I would avoid this netgear model like the plaque. Even my Bob Lite modem is more consistent than my more expensive D6300 modem.

As always do some research before buying.

    • Cheers for confirming my thoughts … had a tplink which was fantastic (but old) … definitely going with them again in the future.
