Photo with policeman

Hi everyone,

Please do not judge me if my question sounds silly. My mum is here visiting us from overseas. Sure thing we take her around Sydney showing all sight seeings of this beautiful city. BUT. She wants to be pictured with policeman. Australian policeman.
Sometimes we see policemen around walking, buying coffee… Do you think it is ok to approach them and ask to pose for a photo with my mum?
I know it sounds stupid. It sounds childish… But really - is it bad?

Your opinions are highly appreciated.

Clearly some Police are more than happy to engage with public!

It's legal to photograph policemen (in a public place) so technically even if they didn't consent, you would be legally entitled to stand near them and take photographs.

Oh really? Thank you! You made my mum's day! Will be photohunting policemen coming weekend, yaaahooooo

Yes. they are public servant. so you can take their picture and even videotape them without consent.

I've recorded and took pictures of policeman and policewoman arresting a drug dealer in a pikachu suit

Was it the drug day dealer, the police or you in the pikachu suit?

  • I'm sure if you ask nicely they won't mind :)

Just be polite. They can decline.

They just can't stop you from taking a photo.

Might be the difference between a smile and a scowl.

If you want to photo people it's only polite to smile and ask nicely, seems obvious to me.

  • Just be nice about it, I'm sure you won't have a problem.

  • the only way in Australia for this to happen is if you mention your mother's fantasies about policeman :P

  • don't attempt to or ask when they are in pursuit.

but if they are idling by, just ask. We asked a federal police officer on a bike to take a photo with the kids. and he was happy to do so.

just approach them with a big smile and hands in the open preferably extended above your head

  • Please post pics or it didn't happen
