Digital TV Tuner for Laptop

I wanted to make use of my multimedia room's current capability of TV. I've got this on my wall and I've confirmed it to be a fully functioning socket.

So with my limited knowledge, I can assume that I don't need the antenna which normally comes with these packs?

Assuming this is the case, can someone recommend me a setup or product which won't cost over $30 and won't clutter up my desk? Feel free to post stuff you can locate on sites.

18/09/14 EDIT - This is a post-review of this item which was purchased on voolish's recomendations.

• Aesthetically, this unit looks fantastic. For the price that I paid and the items it came with (remote, no battery + USB receiver + antenna) this was exceptional value

• Prior to the purchase the description stated incompatibility to W8's Media Center. I got it working on Media Center.

• This product receives all the channels you would expect, and works fine. I cannot review the antenna right now, and probably won't unless this post receives more attention, my current setup simply uses the wall socket for connectivity

• What more is there to say? It looks solid, works great and does exactly what it's designed to do - can't really argue with that. IMO, this is the best one on the market for its price.

  • Any cheap one of eBay should work fine. Just make sure it says DVB-T and comes with a drivers disc. It's also nice if you can snag a remote to get it working with Windows Media Centre. I haven't had any luck with other programs and TV even after troubleshooting for a couple hours. Just remember you have to buy Media Centre with WIN 8 but it comes free with WIN 7.

    • Snagged this one. You picked the prettiest tuner of the bunch under budget. When it arrives I'll do a post-review on the top link so if anyone else is interested they'll get my opinion.

  • As per above DVB-T. Read reviews online as the software makes or breaks it.

All of them that i've seen come with a pigtail - RCA adapter (so you'll need an extenstion to plug it into the wall).

The very old model i used to have was the Gigabyte "GT-U7200". There are heaps on the market

    • Definitely alot to choose from, just needed the opinions of current owners and what they were currently using.

Nearing the end of the search when I compared yours to voolish's it really was just personal taste and preference, I went with his. But this was good advice nontheless, thanks.

      • np. Make sure you test the card with different antennas (i.e. the crappy stock one, the wall etc).

The best antenna we ever used was a large bunny ears from an old tv.
