Replace rear windscreen

The rear windscreen on my wife's Mazda2 was smashed by a golf ball. Where can I get a professional replacement at a fair price? I'm in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. O'Brien quoted $637 and National Windscreens quoted $485. I haven't asked the nearest Mazda dealership yet, but I'm almost scared at what they'll quote me…..
I will eventually be reimbursed by the local golf club (I hope)but meanwhile there's going to be a big hole in my pocket. Any suggestions?

When they quoted did they say "foooooorrreeeeeee hundred and eighty five dollars"

  • …I wonder what year, what make, what model car you have

    • Mazda2 2009 Model - 5 door hatchback. Rear window (with built-in demister)-
      Any ideas?

  • I'm pretty sure the dealer will be a FAIRWAY of $485.00

Check your insurance policy, most have a free windscreen replacement, once a year.

    • I'd be pretty TEED off if it was more than that!

  • Check the internet for smaller suppliers locally.

We found a big price difference on a commodore screen from the big guys and a local traveling guy. No direct help as he is in NSW, but I am sure you will find a comparable local installer.

Honestly, if I knew someone else was eventually paying I would just go with whoever will do the best, or quickest job.

    • Eventually… Like others have said, I'd want a better reassurance than that.

Try the RACV. The RACQ was cheapest for my needs in Qld.

Try a smaller, local operator in your area. There may just be a slight delay while the get the right glass for your car.

I did it this way a few years ago - less than half the cost of using a big company like O'Briens. It was a Friday afternoon, so they were going to do it on the Monday, but my husband happened to work near the place they got the glass from (other side of town from us), so was able to pick it up on the way home, so we were able to get it done on the Saturday morning!

  • Could always claim through your insurance and they go get the money from the golf club's insurer.

    • Most people's excess will be more than the value of a windshield.

      • Excess is only payable if you are at fault. You get the excess back when the 3rd party pays up. And insurance companies are so much better at getting money out of people.

  • Try the places in the industrial areas around Sunshine. You should get a much cheaper price than that. As to whether there is any real difference in the quality of the glass I couldn't say. But I'm sure it has to meet aussie standards anyway.

  • Thanks for all the advice. Had the job done quickly and efficiently by National Windscreens for $395. The quote from O'Brien's was $627 - $232 more!!
The golf club will reimburse me the whole amount so all's well that ends well….
    Thanks again for suggestions
