Suunto Ambit 2 GPS Fitness Watch $399.95 Shipped @ Mountain Designs (Was $649.95)

This clickfrenzy Fathers' Day deal seems pretty good for a GPS equipped heartrate monitor and purchases over $100 ship free.

It is still for RRP at Rebel, and the cheapest Aussie price I found was $460 pre shipping.

  • Bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CMRJQUY/ref=oh_aui_detai… as a b'day gift for my SO long time ago. According to him, we need extra accessories to measure heart rate accurately. I'm interested in getting inexpansive accessories, let me know if anyone finds any.

    • The deal is for the Ambit 2, which has quite a few more features than the Ambit 2 S you purchased (full feature comparison here). My understanding is that both with take an external HRM, but these don't seem to be sold by Mountain Designs.

      • My googling indicates it requires a Suunto HRM.

        • I wouldn't go so far as to say "requires". The watch has one inbuilt, and luvyrselfish says an external one might be more accurate.

        • @tplen1: It has one inbuilt? I'm not seeing that anywhere, can you tell me how you know? Does it use a Mio Alpha type blue/green laser?

I'm also a bit confused by that link you posted in reply to him. One is 72g, the other is 92g but the one listed in this bargain is 82g. Confusing.

        • My apologies. On the first point, I'd made an assumption given the page mentions heartrate in the description and specs fields (and because other watches do these checks from the wrist). It seems I was wrong on this point, but guyvb's post below seems to talk more on the point.

In terms of weight, I don't know what the story is. The page I had compares the Ambit 2 S, which has fewer features and is lighter, with the Ambit 2. This latter model differs in weight by colour, with the black version's 89 grams against the silver version's 92. 82g is possibly the weight of the Ambit 2 S, the Ambit 2 R, or just a typo on Mountain design's behalf.

You need a chest strap for HR. From what I read it's ANT+ compatible, so theoretically any Suunto / Garmin / Wahoo etc ANT+ strap will work - as well as bicycle speed/cadence sensors, etc.

    https://www.suunto.com/en-AU/Products/sports-watches/Suunto-…

Although now that I look closely at the MD page, I can't work out whether this particular deal includes the strap or not. Certainly it appears in the second thumbnail, and the RRP would suggest to me it's the HR-included package.

    • The thing that throws me is that it specifies "Suunto ANT, ANT+" not just "ANT, ANT+". I know they're part of the alliance that created the standard but why would they need to throw their brand name at the front of it if it wasn't a proprietary version?

      • Yeah, it's that kind of fuzziness that made me put "theoretically" in my post above. It would probably work just fine with a non-Suunto strap, but that little seed of doubt has been planted in my head.

I actually really want this watch…but not this week.
