Looking for Affordable Glass display cabinet for collectables

Good Day guys,
I am a avid diecast model collector of 1:18 scale models. I collect V8 Supercars, F1 models etc and have a fair few old lego sets that have become rare. I have realised while I own a lot of models, I have gotten to a point where I don't know which ones I own and can't even admire them as they are still in the boxes hidden in a cupboard.

These Lego sets are not in sealed boxes but have been assembled and displayed on top of any available space around the house.

I would love to be able to display them in a nice cabinet. Prefer glass so visitors don't go around touching (read - Dropping and damaging) them. Some models are very rare and can fetch in excess of 300bucks.

I wanted to purchase a ALDI glass cabinet on Saturday. I went to 4 different stores after work at 5pm Saturday and all store sold out by mid morning.

Any ideas? Not anything expensive. Hope to hear from fellow collectors of any items.
cheers

  • Thanks for your reply. I have already looked on gumtree. There is nothing under 450bucks with in 50km of me.

I did have a look at the IKEA one after not being able to get hold of the ALDI cabinet. I didn't like the IKEA one as the shelves are not adjustable and not able to insert extra shelves and rails to hold the extra glass. The ALDI one came with same number of shelves, but being adjustable I would have been able to buy extra rails and glass. The one big advantage of the IKEA one is that it cool 3rd party add ons like LED (rope)lighting and a lock system.

The BORGSJÖ, I have never seen before. Will investigate more.
    cheers

I also collect 1:18 models and have two Detolfs.

I also had some glass custom made and bought these rope screw things to have extra levels. Whack on an LED lamp on top and you are laughing.

    • That's awesome mate.
I have looked at some people's work online last night.

Did you just use the 5mm rope screws and just sit the glass on them? Or do you need something in between the glass and screws? Any other reinforcement required to hold the glass. I saw one guy who used fishing wire to support the glass as well.

Is it cheap to get glass cut? I tried a search and found 2 Australian sites that have online quote and they worked out about 35bucks per shelf.
Loved your set up. I started off with 1:18 Maisto and Bburango models. Later started Autoart and v8 1:18 and F1 1:18 models.

      Thanks for your info.

      Cheers.

I believe they were 6mm wire rope grips.

Very similar to those. You can get very slim ones at Bunnings but I think they were like $14 for 2 and when you need 16 per cabinet…..

I also bought those little flat 1cm diameter rubber circle door stopper type things.

The glass I got from a little glass cutting workshop you might find in an industrial area.
It was about $30 for the 8 shelves. My dad did know the guy so it may have been a tad cheaper because of that.

        • Awesome thanks mate. Looks simple to follow instructions.

Now I need to find someone to drag to Ikea to help me load up the Detolf cabinet. Downside of being single by myself. Heard Ikea staff don't help load stuff in cars

  • I just saw the Aldi ones at the Preston Market store. They seemed to have a few in stock. Not sure where in Melbourne you are located.

    • That's too far from me mate unfortunately. I am in Berwick and work in Knox area.
      Cheers for the info.
