AirAsia - possible to check seating availability before booking flight?

Hi all,
I have never been on an AirAsia flight before, and eager to try it on the Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur route.

  1. Can one simulate booking a flight, but not actually commit to it - and check what seats are still available? I intend to pay for seatings. So if there are no good seats left, I could try another flight. Is this possible?

  2. Which days are the flights less full, on the MEL-KUL route?

  3. Would an emptier flight means increased chance of the optiontown upgrade to the 3 seats (or perhaps Premium Economy)?

Any info/tips appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

    • Thanks for your response. I meant seating chart showing seat availability of a given flight, before committing to booking the flight.

Yes, I think you can select your seat during the booking process prior to making the final payment. But you can only see the seat availability of those who chose to pick their seats not for all passengers. Hope this helps

This. Seat selection is part of booking process. Pull the pin on the booking prior to credit card details and you're ok.

  • Thanks alexlhb and battler, very helpful indeed. Would anyone be able to shed some light on (2) or (3)?

In my experience of 20+ AirAsia flights and one more tomorrow its not factual at all.. if you were to select a seat when creating a booking it shows you the seat map etc, the number of seat taken up on the map is usually not true.. however AirAsia have now gone on the live Amadeus system for travel agents .. maybe you could ask them to check seat availability etc although not sure if it lists the exact amount of just +9 like normal.

    • This is really interesting! So, what you are saying is that more of the seats may show as taken (not available) than is actually the case. Thanks very much for the tip about checking with travel agents too.

      • Or it could be the opposite.. could show a mostly empty plane but when you arrive its a full flight. will test it again in the morning so far i have both the rows in front and behind me empty.. flights in 8 hours will let you know if the current empty/occupied seat map matches when onboard

        • Yes, please, I am really curious about this. Thanks very much, will await your comments after the flight :-)

@bluesky: Hey mate, just got off the flight from Myanmar to Bangkok. Now waiting for another flight to Sri Lanka.. The AirAsia flight was completely full with no spare seats at all even though it showed me many empty ones just a few hours before check inn opened.

Have two more AirAsia flights next week from Sri Lanka to Sydney via KL, i will test those aswell

        • @davohatcher:
Thanks for the observation. Perhaps the number of people who pay for pre-allocated seating is very low. Hence, the seats aren't allocated until boarding time.

If this is the reason, perhaps its different for the different routes - i.e. on some routes people are more willing to pay in advance for seats?

Let us know your observations during next week's flights. I am particularly interested in the KL to Syd flight - as it may show if people are more(or less) willing to pre-book seating for AirAsia flights from/to an AUS city, compared to other routes.

Meanwhile, thanks and happy travelling! :-)
