Portable / Desktop DAB+ Radio with decent sound

Parents are looking for a good sounding DAB+ Radio. After recommendations on what to get.

At the moment they have one of those cheap basic single speaker portable radios, but its on its way out since it now only works on batteries and they want to upgrade to something with decent sound. Preferably twin speakers.

  • Unsure of the brand quality, but DSE currently have 30% off Bush DAB+

  • Looked at bush but they have nothing in there range that impressed me or met my specs.

One thing I have learnt with DAB+ radios is to ensure it has a socket for connection of external aerial. DAB+ reception is a fickle thing especially if you reside on the outskirts of a metro area. My experience: The radio will work with its internal aerial in one spot; move 2ms away and reception disappears. The signals are transmitted on the VHF band and sometimes an external aerial will be required for reliable reception. I have tried the cheapie DAB+ versions which us Ozbargainers would probably go for! The internal aerials on these appliances are pretty useless unless you are in a strong signal footprint. A case of you get what you pay for.

  • Lenco Portable Digital DAB+ FM Radio AUX Input 6+6W Speakers DR-02S DR02S on Ebay looks good.

  • I have the previous version of this. Don't know if they need the ipod dock but it's a DAB radio and has decent sound. Can be had for less that $150 if you search around. http://www.dicksmith.com.au/docks/sony-mega-bass-dab-clock-d…

    • Same .. paid $75 on special from DSE :)

    • Looks good. Anybody comment on how this sounds?

Far out just get it. It's only $60. What do you want it to be, pack of card size with 5 days battery, BT LE to 100m with 100W 7.2 surround sound?

It's a radio. For your parents. For $60. A name brand to boot. 2x 5W is good enough.

Heck buy 5 and sell the other four for $80 to $100 to then upgrade to the most expensive DAB you can find.

  • I bought a Sangean DPR 25 plus for $120. Good sound with two speakers even though I connected it to the old stereo which turned the radio into a ripsnorter. I think digital radios are greedy on batteries, so a adapter is good.

    • The DPR-25 has been superseded by the DPR-26. So guessing just an updated version.

Also read that having a larger single speaker on a portable radio is actually better than having two smaller speakers close together.

I'm now looking at the Sangean DPR-45 which has one large 5" speaker. Now unsure. As I can buy for about 45 and 26 for about the same price.

  • I have a Kogan DAB radio with wifi and it's fantastic - brilliant sound. However, the model I have is no longer offered, but there are other models in its place that may be as good.

  • Very happy with Sangean DPR-67.

    • Ended up buying the Sangean DPR-45 its one of the larger sized portable units. Comes with a single big 5 inch speaker and easy to read dimmable display. With its 5 quick access and 10 additional memory slots you can scroll through. Very impressed with the sound from it.
