Do you mind filling out a survey for a university electrical project?

Hi there,

I need to conduct market research for a university design project, and hoping you could help me out by filling out a survey.

I would appreciate your help,
Thanks

  • Did the survey and it actually quite pleasant.

  • Done! Best of luck with your studies.

  • Good luck with your research. How many participants are you looking for?

    • Thanks. Enough to see a general trend (if any) in the responses. I think 25-50 would be nice.

  • Done :)

  • Did the survey. Answered for soy milk where you wrote milk. But soy milk keeps longer. Don't know if this will skew your results.

    • No more than my results…
We live next to a late night Supermarket so running out of milk is somewhat annoying but not nearly as annoying as a 5K drive would be.

      PS.
OP, while it's implied by the earlier questions that the Smart fridge would know the expiry of the milk, veges and meat.. it doesn't explain how…
If I have to scan everything into the fridge when I get home, I'm not interested in paying any extra..
If it's as usable as my "Smart TV" isn't, I'm not interested.

      • I didn't add much detail about how it works for two reasons: 1. Still researching ways of adding contents to the fridge. 2. I think making a survey with technical details makes it a bit cumbersome to fill out, but I do agree that it might make my results biased.

To answer your question, perishables such as milk and eggs would be updated automatically with no user input required. However, the problem with other items such as vegetables is no one keeps produce in the same place, which makes it hard to monitor. This means that some form of user input would be required…

          1. Still researching ways of adding contents to the fridge.

Simple. Since it's connected to the cloud, it should have internet connection, barcode reader to a database. Now since the barcode doesn't have date specific information, you'll probably need to get manufacturers to modify a QR code or something next to their barcodes so it's easy to scan both in one go.

Vegetables can be a bit of a pickle.. perhaps co-operating supermarkets can have little stickers or so to slap onto their products as identifiers, this would mean you need to build a database of EVERY vegetable/fruit in existence, do a pilot one for a specific region before you expand to global markets (much more variety of veges/fruits).

You'll need something useful, and ridiculously easy to use for the large majority of the population, they need convenience. I wouldn't charge a high premium on the technology until it's mature, this way you're signalling to the market that you are confident with your product. Only reap your profits once your brand is built up :)

          @cwongtech:

Yeah, barcode scanner is the easiest and most feasible which I'm already considering. It will work fine for meats and prepackaged produce.

The problem is though, people are lazy. Vegetables are the biggest issue, because they're the easiest to spoil, and hardest to monitor. Even in supermarkets, you have to manually "look up item" to purchase it, so I don't think they're going to consider stickers.

I guess a reason someone would purchase a 'smart fridge' would be because they wanted to reduce costs and waste, so some onus can be placed on them to want to manually enter some items.

Yeah, I guess so.. Doesn't happen too much to me (living next to a supermarket has led us to shopping as required, rather than a weekly bulk shop) hence I guess I'd just find it annoying and not worth the effort.

    Done.

I don't know why, but having basic tasks move more towards dependence/reliance on technology weirds me out. I guess the concept of a smart fridge seems superfluous to me as I don't have a large family or children, and I keep good track of what's in the fridge and when things are due to expire - so nothing really goes to waste, nor do I run out of basic things like milk because I always know how much is left from my last use (and noone else in the house drinks milk).

Though, of course, I can totally see the value in having a 'smart fridge' with those features if you live in a larger household, where more people use the same items like milk, which makes it harder for you to know how much is left if you're out doing grocery shopping. Definitely.

Still… I guess I'm old fashioned and would rather force myself to use my brain and memory, and get into the routine of checking the fridge thoroughly before doing a grocery shopping trip (and making a list before leaving) - eliminates the potential of buying unnecessary fresh produce etc (things that will go off if not used quickly), and reminds you about what you have left to use. I dislike wastage.

Good luck with the project :)

  • Thanks everyone who did the survey, appreciate it!

  • Op,

Please mark expired. The survey is no longer available.
