PayPass- Can a Merchant Stop You for Paying This Way?

I was grabbing Pizza last night from the local domino's.

I asked one staff if I can use paypass and she asked the manager and came back and said its not working.

So I waited for my Pizza and paid with another girl using the same terminal, and I showed them that Paypass does work.

The chap next to me then asked to pay with Paypass and the first girl responded, We are not allowed to use paypass and refused him and inserted the card.

He was miffed.

Anyways, Anyone else experience this and what reason would the merchant have to not use it when compared to inserting the card? Surely its not costing them more for a contactless purchase?

    Maybe it wasn't working.

    I know we have that problem at our workplace, it just displays the "Welcome" screen

    Because the fees on a paypass transaction are higher than on a regular transaction… I'm pretty sure thats the case at least.

    Of course they can, its their business. If they said they only except donkies in exchange theres nothing you can do. If you dont like it shop elsewhere.

    Their machine worked and its a valid payment method.

    Its kinda like saying, We take cash only (but will only accept $10 notes and not $5 notes)

    I just think its entirely strange.

    Pretty sure there is an increased fee for contactless, sort of covers for "insurance" because there's a greater risk of fraud. Though I believe that business should suck it up, I doubt it's exorbitant and small businesses with no minimum and paypass get huge ticks in my book.

      Not that im disagreeing, but when you insert the card, they still dont even ask for a pin, as its less than $99.

      I'm all for security as well as ease of use.

        That only applies for CREDIT transactions under $35. Quite a few places have it, like Coles and Woolies.

    PayPass is cheaper merchant fees than pressing credit, if you have a Debit MC/VISA you can always just press credit anyway :P

    My local Dominos like to say "Savings" after receiving your card before giving you the terminal
